Just picked my First YALE lock

My friend lost his set of house keys and changed his front door Yale lock so I scabbed the old one from him.

Sat down expected to be sat for ages and opened it in under 1 min, I used the little rake I made 2 days ago

I'm a little chuffed I can do it almost instantly with the rake and I've picked it twice with the hook (so I could really say I picked it)

I opened my first Yale lock today as well, it was on my first lockout. I work for a locksmith shop every afternoon (3 hrs/day), through a Co-Op program at my High School, and the owner asked if I wanted to come try to open this old ladies door. I was pretty nervouse, and I was like, well, I'll come watch, so we got there, and he said I could try for like 5 minutes, and if I didn't get it, he'd open it.

I tried single pin picking, raking, then tried the pick gun. I've opened locks before using all these methods, but the one that worked here was the pick gun, about 20 snaps, and I was in. Felt pretty good to pick a lock I've never tried for the first time.

well done the yale is a standard lock and a very popular one you both are well on your way now. how are you getting on with those spool pins yale have

Many Yale locks have at least 2 spool pins, in fact the newer ones have more.

My guesss is that the Yale you picked was either old, had been repinned by a locksmith who had taken the spool pins out, or you have legendary talent for picking spool pins.

Yale along with many other locks can sometimes be opened easier by raking or single pin picking, it all depends on the lock. I have a yale i have never opened with pin by pin picking yet it rakes open with a diamond in seconds, drives me nuts knowing this.The spools are easily overcome by the raking yet defeat me the other way yet many other yale locks i can only open by pure picking to overcome the spools.It goes to show that all methods should be tried to open locks espcially if on the door with a customer waiting.

Hadn't used my picks in a while but decided to take them along to work (was servicing an older piece of electrical equipment) and they tend to have fairly cheap locks on that no-one EVER has keys for, so took my picks and as the locks were so cheap managed to pop them all fairly quickly (talking cd case quality locks here).

This however got me going on picking again and have been messing with a yale lock I got a while ago all night, got it open a few times with raking with my snake pick then setting the last pin or so with the diamond, about to put the spool pin back in again however so here goes...

I know its a little late, but good job! I picked my first padlock fairly recently, the 'key' is to just READ as much as possible on these forums, so many techniques to try and things that work for some and not others.

Yeah... I went from an utter n00b to picking god by simply reading the entire forum and applying my new found knowledge.

My first Yale lock was a 6 Pin euro cylinder.

I spent hours trying to pick yale locks, until someone mentioned using very light tension to overcome the security pins. Now they fall in under a min. Well Done.

Im glad you're having luck even though it is only my second day picking, i still carnt pick a 5 pin yale lock even when i have removed the spool pins and replaced them with ordinary ones, i can manage 3 pins or 2 pins and 1 spool pin=3 pins intotal thats my greatest feat yet , but no worrys ill soon be picking any lock i look at in a matter of seconds ( i hope )

A little thing i do to open my yale is you use VERY light tension and rake it into a false set on purpose.

Pin pick the pin and it will rotate the plug the other way dependind on what way yopur picking.

I do this and i can say the spool pins are sometimes help.

Also light tension will make them easy to rake.

Hey I picked my first yale last week at my friends house. I used my picking gun. took me about 15 snaps. It makes you feel good to open high security locks.
