Stubborn Padlock Pin

Postby Dis_tor_shun » 16 May 2006 22:44

Ok, I'm not a proffesional locksmith at all. The only locks I've ever picked were two disc tumblers (a Sentry fireproof safe, and a small cabinet lock) that were relatively easy. I'm currently trying to pick this bulky, silver padlock with no brand name on it, and I'm near 100% sure it's a pin-tumbler. I can manage to get all the pins in place except for one, in about the second or third pin position. From what I've read, A stubborn pin means it's a 'mushroom pin'. However, I've also read that when this pin is attempted, that the cylinder turns in the opposite direction, but it hasn't done this. Anyone have a good suggestion on how to pick this stubborn pin?

Is the stubborn pin "spongey"? I mean does it travel well beyond where you think it should set? If so, that is not the trouble pin, it probably just needs to be set earlier in the sequence. When you get the lock to that state you mentioned I would gently but firmly (you have to overcome the torque from your wrench) press each pin looking for the reverse rotation you spoke of. If they are set they will not move, if u have push back on one, let it come back, but keep it as a sort of "tug of war" so that the moment you overcome the spool or mushroom, you can put her above the sheer line.

Remember that some pins actually sit at the sheer-line for security, it is possible that your problem pin is where it should be and you need to backtrack. Also remember that you can buy 10 of the same locks, crack 9 easily, and wrestle for weeks with the 10th, sometimes better to take a break try some others and go back,

Cool, thanks. I'll look into that.

good info cracksman. maybe try some WD-40? maybe it is just a 'sticky' pin, but I have had that happen to me before. Just try to 'break it in'

Could already be a set pin with a high setting pin behind it.
