New Locks

Postby Krypos » 28 May 2006 0:06

Woot! i bought 8 various locks online...used locks, on ebay, 6 combo master locks, 2 key locks, all open, no keys, no combos. 2 bucks, plus 11 shipping. woot!

to the point- i think the 64mm lock is bust, it has two roller balls inside, one on each side of the shackle, however, when i close the lock, it doesnt lock, it springs back up. all the rest work fine- well they lock fine. is it bust or is it that it needs a key to put it into the locked position?

ps- whats the difference between a lock with one "bolt" (ie- the part that locks the lock, goes into shackle) and locks with two?

thanks all!

Im guessing you mean a padlock that has 2 straight shackles?
They are for chains, the chain attaches to the fixed side or the side that doesnt unlock first and then the free end can be wrapped around the object you are secureing then locked on the open side of the lock.

Oh... you mean the locking dogs. :)

I'm not sure why some manufacturers use only 1 locking dog to be honest, since it means you only have to use a shim on one side - probably to reduce cost.

With 2 locking dogs, you need to shim both sides to open, and with only 1 locking dog, you only need 1 shim.

During manufacture its a lot easier and quicker to only have one cutout, on cheap lower security locks one latch is fine.

Two latches are more secure as one side can not be ripped out quite so easily.

Locks with ball mechs inside normally have to have twin latches due to the way the insides work.

Some cheapo locks like luggage locks have not only one latch on one side but that side is the fxed side which means the shackle could simply be pulled out at the open end sometimes just by putting too much weight on the lock.
