cant get the barrel out

Postby moez54 » 31 May 2006 6:37

Hi every1, pretty dumb question perhaps.

Lockpicking is suddenly my newfound hobby, locks have alwayz interested me, and i have a padlock that i wanna get the barrel out so i can examine it and learn about what im doing.

Unforunately i cant get my hands on all the tools listed in the sticky about dissasembling a padlock, soo i tried the heat method.
I heated my padlock on the gas stove for a good 5 minutes on high level, andi dropped it in2 a metal container filled with icy cold water, there was lots of rumbling and tumbling noises then wen i took it out (i had the lock open whilst heating) i cudnt dissassemble it as it was still intact. Perhaps i cannot even do it by this method and ive misunderstood the sticky.
i also tried it with the lock closed whilst heating and opened so im all out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated

You could get a Dremel-like tool pretty cheap, and use that to cut the lock's body open.
Have a look at the picture in

- I also tried the heating method, but it didn't work for me, so I used a Dremel.

I cant remember what the sticky says but a few points are as follows,

It only works on bras locks and then not all of them.

You should not put it on the stove but hot water, putting it in a flame damages the springs inside.

Sometimes you need to give the lock a knock once youve cooled it down rapidly.

This only works on the cheaper sort of lock and some better locks, a well made weather proof lock will not succum to the method.
