Hey, it's an Ultra padlock!

See 3rd post: viewtopic.php?t=13235&highlight=

They're a piece of sh*t. If you're having trouble getting them open, make sure you're applying enough torque -- the plug has to rotate a few degrees before the pins will bind, and you have a spring at the back of the plug that counters your torque.

Hey silver...

I have the exact same lock and I can open it.

Try using VERY light tension. Start from the back and move to the front. If you notice any really tightly bound pins, work past those first. For me this lock ranges any where from 5 minutes to 5 seconds for me to pick. Its pretty tricky.

Just keep trying and dont get discouraged!

I can make one observation from looking at the pictures:

If you were pressing the very back pin up at all you were likely messing up. The back pin would likely have been at shear line with no key inserted. Then your front pin was also very low and if you were bumping it very much at all while trying to set the center 2 pins, you could have been oversetting it.

The tolerances on those cheap locks are also pathetic, and sometimes require a bit more tension than you're used to using. I have found that on extremely cheap locks the pin chamber drilling is usually pretty bad off from a centerline. That makes the locks bind funny, like 1 pin binding really hard and the other 3 not binding at all until the 1 pin is set.

That gets even worse when the chambers are far larger than the pins in them. With this you get a plug that has a lot of movement even before you begin picking. These can be a bit tricky just because they're so loose. Discovering the correct binding and picking order is what you have to shoot for.

I was talking about the padlock that you smashed in my reply. I noticed after the fact that you had moved on to a different lock. Sorry.

picking advice

Postby greyman » 2 Jun 2006 11:50

Hey silverusa

You should try not swearing so much and relax - you cannot pick a lock when you are angry. Learning to pick takes time. If it won't open, you are doing it wrong. Take a breath and have a think about what is going on inside the lock.

zeke79 wrote:Kwikset knockoff. It will be a much much better starter lock for you. There are 5 pins in the lock and if it is a deadbolt then it is very easy to remove pin stacks to work your way up.

Wait....

There actually are Kwikset knockoffs?
That really scares me, i was under the impression that Kwikset had nothing decent to copy.

Yeah. Lock picking is not for the impatient as you can see.

OK ok guys read the whole topic :P

I smashed the master one but i went on to my deadbolt defiant lock and i opened it and i am able to open it in couple seconds now :)

I am getting like 10 of different locks tommorrow so i can practice on them :]

The good practice was i went outside and closed the door i didnt have key (only lockpicks) and i picked it in 1 min  thats giving me an inspiration for other locks
