Being new to lock picking, I was wondering if you could use the tension rench in the back of the lock. like at the back there is usually a gap. it would make picking a lock i have with a small key hole a lot easier.

do you mean the lock is not on anything and you want to put the wrench in the back where the tail piece would go. if so yea you could but why practice this way.
