What is the piece of metal in front of the key hole?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

What is the piece of metal in front of the key hole?

Postby dan_osirra » 3 Jun 2006 10:38

I have just installed a Yale night-latch lock. There is a metal cover over the key-hole. This is loose, and often gets in the way of the key. I wanted to know whether it should be loose and what it is there for.

Thanks,

Dan.

Sounds like a curtain to me. It stops people from seeing the inner workings of the lock.

I could, of course, be totally wrong.

Does cylinder look like this....

Are you referring to the thin disc of metal that spins around a bit in front of the keyway. It is designed to be of great annoyance to pickers/drillers and anyone with bad intentions in getting in without a key!!

If he turned the key while about 5mm in the lock then tryed to push the key in maybe he thinks this pin is stopping the key?

Its as horsefeathers said, an anti-drill/pick feature of the X series Yale cylinders. Probably the PBS1 or 2 deadlocking night latch in this case.
