If motivation is your key, you might want to read the article wired wrote about the Dutch open.
There's a part where an experienced picker tells a beginner how to do things:
"in camp, we learn how to pick by getting stuffed into a cage. Death is a great motivator."

I don't hope that it's necessary, but i do agree that it helps. A lot.
