Defective Masterlock?

Postby good_guy » 4 Jun 2006 17:56

Well i went to walmart today and purhcased a brinks 5 pin pad lock with spool pins, a mountain security 6 pin brass padlock, and a masterlock 4 pin padlock. But i noticed that my 4 pin masterlock's cylinder is very loose, and it seems like the pins are missing their springs because when i flip it upside down, the pins fall in. and also when i try to open it with a key upside down, it doesnt open. I could also pick the lock in less than 5 seconds. Is there something wrong with this lock? or are masterlocks just like that?

It all sounded normal up to the "it doesn't work with the key when upside down" part. That's not normal. The small springs used in these locks are no great piece of engineering, but it's not usually that bad.

If it were me, I'd rip the thing apart and see what's going on... but 'sup to you.

Have you tried picking this lock yet? if so have you simply pushed the pins up as far as they will go? if so youve damaged the springs, if not take it back to the shop for a new one before stripping it down, strip it down if they wont replace it.

i think that could be it. maybe i should be more careful next time. but would this make it easier to pick? because i can pick it real quick, but i dont want a false sense of success.
