HPC Picks

Does HPC still sell those black-colored picks with the anodized blue riveted handle's? I cannot find them on their website.

Sure. If you go here: http://www.hpcworld.com/lockhpc/p_ccpick.htm you will see the blue colored rakes. In real life, those are actually anodized blue, and they look awesome. Unfortunately you cant by anything directly from their site unless you are a certified HPC dealer, or a certified locksmith. (What the hell does that mean? I work for a locksmith, so am I a certified locksmith?)

All in all, you cant buy those picks unless you get them from a locksmith. Any "certified" locksmiths want to buy me some of those color coded series picks?

Well, I actually just started working officially last week, so I will have to wait for a while. Im not too sure about how that will go if I ask them if he could get them for me. I know they can get them, because they have a whole bag of each type. They already know that I have my own set, so hopefully they will. Good idea spider, for some reason I never thought of that.

HPC deals ONLY with distributors...I live about a half hour from the place and I have to order there stuff through a distributor with a 2 week wait because they don't stock the stuff...go figure.

Certified means that you have a license. Some sort of piece of paper that you know your material. ALOA, LSI, there are a couple others. What you should probably do is learn what you need, go to ALOA, take the certification test, and hang it up on your wall. (given that you pass, which, you should)

The guy you work for is most likely a member to one of these organizations. In order to buy materials, they usually have to set up some sort of account and provide member registration forms. That way they have you on record in the event that some guy goes all over town committing what the police would deem 'professional' jobs.

The drawback to things like ALOA is that continued membership is expensive. You have to pay annual dues. You don't have to, you're still technically certified I believe, but you no longer get the mail and memos about upcoming stuff. You don't really need to. Just buy catalogues and you should remain up-to-date.

As Dave has mentioned. Certification means that you have been tested and have successfully passed a test by a recognized organization. The organization you need to go through very much depends on the country you are from.

Organizations such as ALOA, LockMasters, etc, and certain College's and other programs generally have similar testing procedures. You can contact the supplier to see what sort of accreditation they recognize and from whom. Generally if you purchase stuff through a locksmith who already has an account setup they will hold that company liable, but basically the whole procedure is to protect their own butts from litigation.

Your best bet would be to build up genuine trust with the locksmith you are working for, then ask if he'd purchase them for you. (You could pay him when they arrive). If he trusts you enough to purchase picks for ya, you know you're on the right track.
