Overlift

Postby 2hammers » 4 Jun 2006 16:24

Could someone please explain the difference between a

2 in 1 Mortice Pick Universal

and a

2 in 1 Overlift Pick

I notice that the bottom tang is wider on the overlift pick but am not sure why.

Thanks

2 in 1 mortice pick is used to pick individual levers and 2 in 1 overlift pick lifts all the levers at once.

You can make an overlifter with wire. It's known as a 'j' wire.

For more info search for 'j' wire, and include 'illusion' in the author. I posted a photo not long ago. :)

2hammers,
Its my understanding that when an overlifter is used , all the levers are lifted simultaneously to a point at which all the gates are above the stump and they are held using tension.
The tension is then varied to allow the levers to drop to and catch at the correct possition.

I assume that it only works on lower security locks as antipick notches in the better ones would catch before the true gate.

Overlifter picks

Postby algygale » 10 Sep 2006 12:31

Hi..

Ive just bought some overlifter picks & noticed they have to be filed to fit the locks..

Is it worth me adjusting them to fit say a Union 3LVR or would it be a waste of money & just use wires?

How many 5LVR locks dont have curtains or antipick gates for overlifters to be used on?

Luke has it got it right on,

Its normally non bs locks you use these on,

Whatever you do hold the tang in the vice and file it, dont grip the tube part,

You make your own by getting a steel blank and cutting it down so that it misses the bolt throwing part,
Make a wire so that when it is in the bottom of the key way a bend reaches up high enough to tension the bolt,

Insert the wire and position it so your ready to tension the bolt,

Insert the adapted key blank and turn it up in to the levers (some locks work better in the lock position and others in the unlock position,

Turn the key as far as it will go and then tension the bolt,

Carefully let the levers back down slowly and then at the same time vary the amount of tension on the bolt so the levers drop down but set,

Souber make a good pack of wires to make things like that from or you can use whatever other materials you like for lever wires,

You will only need a few keys and a few wires to cover most locks of the ones that open this way,

Overlifter picks

Postby algygale » 11 Sep 2006 3:56

Thanks for the reply shrub, but i know how to use them..

I was asking about the proper Souber picks, & wondering if its a waste adapting them to a 3LVR..i dont really like using the wires as u have to be a bit cack handed.

Just not sure how many picks i will need for non bs locks without curtains?

Thanks.

That depends how many 3LVR are in your area, I have half a dozen overlifters in my bag that have been filed to fit diffrent size locks...
