I recently purchased a Contractor Grade Master Lock from a local Home Depot store.

I can find no listing of this particular lock EVER being made by Master Lock, nor does the key bitting match any of the published pin lengths although the spacing follows the published standards for the K1/M1 Blank.

Re-Keyable
Steel-bodied rectangular padlock (1 1/2"W x 1 3/4"H x 3/4"T)
1 3/4" Shackle

Anybody have any idea about this, I have not had any cooperation from Master Lock (will not return my calls to customer service). This is mostly curiosity (I wonder if this is a "grey market" product, why is the packaging IDENTICAL to other Master Lock products?, etc.)

BTW, it "bumps" very easily with a standard prepared key, even when the pinning has been changed.

Without a picture of your lock its hard to see what youve got but if its a yellow band on the bottom its just the same as all the others except its got a yellow band instead of a blue one, same goes for the red one.

This particular lock DOES NOT have any banding.

Just a brushed metal body.

The word Master is inscribed into the front and the letters S E J are inscribed into the back.

There is NO highlighting of the letters.

I guess I should have been even more specific -

This Master Lock # 536ADPF is a SOLID Body Steel lock, NOT a LAMINATED as somehow it has been assumed (how can a LAMINATED lock have a BRUSHED finish? )

I do not know how to insert photos in this message or else I would include them to allieviate this state of confusion.

I have already checked that particular reference manual.

I have even searched the Master Lock Co. database for any reference to this Model - NO RESULTS RETURNED, same for the INTERNET search.

Hmmmm, is Home Depot trying to pull a fast-one on people?

As I said before this is a Model # 536KADPF - 4 Pin [I have verified the 4 pins via disassembly]/Re-Keyable Contractor Grade (Pro Series locks have a 4 digit Model #).

By Master Lock Product Code this lock should have 5 pins !

The spacing is correct on the key but the pin depths are not anywhere within Master Lock Co. published parameters.

Dunno how the UPC will help you determine what "Pedigree" this lock has.

If this is not a REAL Master Lock, how will a price code carry that info?

Well the upc is determined by the manuf. so i'm going to use it as part of my search. the number is just a quick reference for inventory really
