Just had to remove 5 of these from some parking posts, none would open with the keys.It turns out they were all rusted and would not open even after spraying with lube etc.2 opened with the drill but the other 3 needed an angle grinder and a lot of force.Shame really as they are easy enough to pick and the abus spools are very forgiving. It seems the cheaper ones do have a stainless body but the shackle itself isnt very weather resistant to corrode that much in a few months.

Jason, above and below all the pretty, shiny pictures, there actually is some text that answers your questions. Seek and ye shall find. Happy hunting.

Nice post, how on earth did you manage to get the bolt off?

Thanks. With bolt, do you refer to the irregular disc (with the hole that's a little more than a semicircle) with the cam that is attached to the rear of the cylinder and is doing the actual action when the cylinder turns? I am not too firm on padlock terms...
Well, whatever it is that you mean, once the lock was open everything came apart pretty easily - no special tools or headaches involved. It has been a while since I did this, so I can't exactly remember, but I do know that it was all pretty easy and straightforward.
Maybe things are mounted a bit different in real Abus made versions.

Ah, i was about to send you one of mine, i've been trying to demolish it for ages, but every version i cut up just keeps the bolt intact, it's killing me.
If that bolt could get off, i'd be able to make some REAL pictures.
Anyway, in general, it looks like a regular abus discus pin tumbler.
Nice post, and nice pictures.
Yours,
Jordy

So, again, with bolt you are referring to the irregular disc with cam that's rotating when the plug is turned?
Is that thing soldered, welded, bolted, pressed or something in your versions?

your assumption is correct, (or at least, that's what i call it, feel free to correct me, more experienced members.) Or is it shackle? ahh i don't know for sure.
Also, it is not kept in place by anything (and not welded/ soldered/ etc), but as i cut the outer shell straight through the middle, i was able to get the cover off, but not the circular bugger itself.
Had i cut a bit more at the back, the front would not have come off, so it's a dilemma, i guess.
Solution is probably to cut twice, allowing it to be pried loose after the second cutting.
Yours,
Jordy

I am still confused. Two people trying to speak english while it's not their first language - I hated this back when I was in the states. Getting a order done with the wetback at the tacobell was hell. So... ...are we talking about the big silver thingy (shackle) or the thing in the center (which I'd call bolt or cam)? jordyh wrote:Also, it is not kept in place by anything (and not welded/ soldered/ etc), but as i cut the outer shell straight through the middle, i was able to get the cover off, but not the circular bugger itself.

By this description I think you mean the big silver thingy (shackle). I am kinda surprised, it came of really without any problems, it was not even tight. Maybe Abus is manufactured to closer distances or something. Cutting twice would indeed be your solution I guess. I assume you really are completely centered with your cuts on the side.
I have another genuine Abus here... there is soccer on TV tonight. I hate soccer. Nobody is gonna complain about the Dremel noise.... hmmmm. Sacrifice my last Abus? Keep it alive....
Hmmmm....

the big thing we're talking about is what i mean.
the medium sized thing is the cam.
keep your regular abus like it is, don't kill the fun in picking it.
If we meet at the dutch open, i'll give you one of mine to cut, i've got 3 left anyway.
Yours,
Jordy

I never looked into a real ABUS one, but - in your locks - what holds the shackle after you have cut the housing into two parts?

The housing itself, i cut it straight through the middle, which means that i haven't got enough space to pull it out.
There might be a few differences between the original abus and this knockoff that make the difference, but i haven't looked into that.
