Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

There are a lot of really good lock cutaway/breakdown/inside view topics here. What if someone made a sticky in here with links to breakdown photo topics of individual locks posted here in the past few years, and then update it as more come in? Kind of like the thread with all of the different pick sets.

I love taking things apart, and I love seeing the inside of locks, and it can be incredibly helpful sometimes to visualize the inside for everyone, but the topics are all over the place and it's difficult to search for them.

Just figured I'd throw that out there. Seemed like I good idea to me.

Well, if you feel like it, go ahead and start collecting all the threads. Make a new thread. Call it "The Official Lock Breakdown Archive", or some such. Put links to all the threads you can find. Then, PM me and I'll be happy to make it a sticky.

The problem with that is that all the interesting cutaways are of high-security locks. I thought about taking pictures of an abloy padlock cutaway and maybe a medeco cutaway I've got for this thread, and saying "I'll try to answer any questions you have about these locks and about which parts you see here do what", but then I realized I couldn't do that because that kind of information is restricted to the advanced sections area 'high-security locks', so I could probably get away with posting pictures of cutaway high-security locks (that's been done many times before in the public section) or ones that have been disassembled with all the parts splayed out, but I can't tell you anything about them or answer any questions about them--would just be kinda frustrating, wouldn't it?

I'd be willing to contribute to the archive, if someone decides to create it.

I personally think that the best thing would be a thread that linked to the OTHER threads with photos.

Having one long thread with a bunch of photos doesn't work well for a couple reasons:
1) Too many pictures makes it almost unbearable for dialup users... bless their little patient heart. ;)
2) People often want to comment after a set of photos, so it gets messy and impossible to find what you want.

Far better to let users continue to post their photos of locks in regular threads, but have one thread that organizes them by linking to them with a title, much like I've done with the links to the tutorials.

All that has to happen is someone has to dig up all the links and send them to me. Make it in this format:

[ URL=http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=10528]Medeco M3 Expanded Photos[ /URL]
[ URL=http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=10528]Kaba Gemini Expanded Photos[ /URL]

etc... etc... (minus the spaces in the tags, of course)

db

P.S. Don't send them to me via PM, 'cause I can't edit PMs. Post them here if you like, and I'll put them into their own thread.

I was thinking along the lines of links like you said. You got it up before I even checked the forums again! Thanks!
