dremmels hands down are the best. earlier i made that comment about the motor because you guys where talking about bench grinders. since everyone is a diy kinda guy around here i figured that was an easy one. you left out one option a plain old drill with some grinding stones.

i have a 230V drill and i have heads for it but its hard to take alot of metal of and whens it up full speed the thing is dam loud.

they sell diffrent grit stone bits just like sand paper get a rough one and try it cant be more than a few dollars. i dont live over there i couldnt even tell you where to get them but i am sure someone around here could. i just picked up a pack of 4 for 3 dollars.

If you get a Dremel I suggest you buy a real Dremel - costs more but is soooooo much better than the cheapo copies.

I'd say both to be honest.

A good set of needle files in my opinion is very handy.

I totally agree with this, dremels are awesome (as I say this I realize that I have yet to kick out the money for another one - my first was not mine, it was from work - and they let me take it home with me, but when I quit they made me give it back).

I would liketo add that you should get a good quality brand of files, its worth it in the end. I have gone through 2 sets, the third are nicholson's, worth the extra bones.

Jason13 - Files can be used on hacksaw blades, use a coarser blade for rough shaping. If you don't have a grinder or its too late I always use shears and files, works good for me.

i have this 230V drill and i can place it in my Vice and use that as my dremmel and its pretty good.

Thanks for all your advice ive also made a pick just from drill but trhe bench grinder would be a faster process then my drill to do the little bits.

That will not work at all... Dremel rotary tools run up to 30,000RPM and then some. Power drills won't go anywhere near that fast. I would say stop beating around the bush, and just buy a Dremel and a bench grinder.

Buy whatever attachments you think will be useful. If you are not sure how useful an attachment will be, leave it at the store, knowing it is there in the event you might find you actually do need it. Dremel accessories (at least the non-generic ones) tend to be slightly expensive, but I would get a pack of cutoff wheels, including a few fiberglass cutoff wheels if you ever need to cut through hardened steel bolts. A few grinding stones and sanding wheels would be useful as well.

Ive just used my drill to make a pick from a small hacksaw blade.

I could use the grinder to take some of it of or just for hook picks and my drill does good and ive tryed it and its pretty cool.


all i need is a 6" bench grinder im not planning on making any special picks cuase Hooks are my most important thing at the moment cuase i aitn got any.

and i want to make a few myself with the grinder.

I was looking at the dremels at home despot, they have come down in price significantly, i may pick one up tomorrow. I was trying to make snowman picks earlier today and they just look like crap. I did pull off a ball pick that is identical to the ones on chrispys templates.

Jason, if you want to make picks that work and are good you need.

Dremel (brandname) and all the little goodie attachments, also the extension flex arm.. this is absolutely neccesary when making a close to precise pick.

Needle files.. if you want nice smooth deburred rounded edges and not have a big cloud of pin dust coming out wheny our done picking

Silicon Spray lube and varieing grades of emory paper 1200grit for final finishing

good polishing compound

Buy a couple hacksaw blades.. i hate them personally to much fuss and there flexibility is no where near dip sticks and wiper inserts, They make great handels though!

Vices are ok.. i have no prob holding them
