Hey Duke,
You can put the tension wrench anywhere you want! Some people prefer the bottom and others the top. Also depends how tight the keyway is. On the tight keyways I've come across, I like putting the wrench on top, in front of the first pin. By doing this, I have more room at the bottom for my pick to move around. If you place your t.w. on top (front of first pin) make sure you're careful not to be touching the pin.
Hope this helps.

so... do you mean American brand locks? or just locks in the US in general? cause i'm american, and i rarely see American brand locks... wouldn't deam it neccessary to "have" to know how to pick one at least.
put the tension wrench wherever it's not in the way of your picks.... no set place to put one

i mean locks that are in america i don't mean like american brand locks. The reason i asked this question is becuase i couldn't get the pins to set in a k-something lock i have that i'm trying to pick. I put tennsion or torque on them in the direction that they are supposed to turn and the pin goes in and i think that it is set and it pops back up like nothing.(my pins are on the bottom)

Never fell as thought you "have" to put a tension tool anywhere specific in a lock. Experimentation is a good thing.

Again, experiement. I generally put my tension wrenches fairly far into locks. But I also have short and long versions. Again, experiment until you get what works best for you. I suggest getting one lock that you can pick fairly consistantly, and then keep experimenting.

Duke,
Don't getting bogged down in the details, just pick the lock. Tension wrenches can go on the top, the bottom, both, can go in a few millimeters or a few inches. Sometimes you need to use a fair bit of force, almost all the time you only need to use a little. You can do it with a hook, a rake, a diamond, a safety pin, etc etc etc...
Just pick something and stick with it until you get it. Put your wrench in as far as it'll go, on the bottom, and use a rake. Then, when you get the lock open twenty or fifty or a hundred times, put the wrench in as far as it'll go, on the top, and use a rake. Experiment experiment experiment, but only after you've figured out how to do it consistently one way.
