ThE_MasteR's Bumpkey Tutorial Remake

Postby ThE_MasteR » 26 Jun 2006 9:27

I just made up a quick tut on how to make a bumpkey. I did this with with my Dremel, and I have to say this was easier than with a file..

What you will need:

A Rotary tool ( Dremel )
A Pack of Cut-off Disks
A key Blank (..Of your choice )
A cold drink Wink

First step, ( whatever that's in red, means it needs to be cut )
Take your original key, and mark where the cuts are like in this picture.
Image
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next,

Cut a " line " of about 1-2mm thick down where the marks of the cuts from the original key are like so,
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is what it would be supposed to look like after the cuts are made,
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now,

Cut a straight line thru all the peaks, try to make the line in the middle of the peaks like this,
Image
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is what it is going to look like after the cuts are made,
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next,

Cut diagonal lines on the peaks like so..
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do this on the other side of the peak also..
Image
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is what it should look like after the cuts have been made to the peaks, the bumpkey is almost finished.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now you wanna be carful here. You need to remove a little bit of metal on the head, and a little bit of metal on the shoulder. I find that taking off 5mm on the shoulder works, and 0.2-0.3mm on the head works ok, but this could work better your own way, this is just my way Wink

Here's the final result on the key..

Nice idea. I'll give it a shot in a few minutes. Funny that I've never thought of using a dremel for making a bumpkey before...
Thanks.

Nice drawings, by the way.

Thanks,

But since there are a few mistakes that I can't fix (no edit), it makes it not that great

Where can you get key blanks? The local Home Depot won't sell me any. I have also went to a lockie but he won't sell me any either.

lockpicks.com is one example of a place that sells Kwikset, Schalge and Weiser blanks. I can't personally vouch for that site as I've never ordered from it before, but people on this board seem to like them!

Would they sell me blanks? Apparently I require some sort of licence to get keyblanks or at least according to the lockie I visited.

com'on you know should know your local mom + pop shop doesn't care about if it's cut or not. come up with a lame excuse and pay for it at the cost of a key cut

I was able to get a few uncut blanks at my local Wal-Mart. I had to pay the same as if they had cut them of course, but to get a few blanks to play with it was worth it I suppose.

Ahh, the good old power of social engineering. It's amazing what people will do for you if you are good at finding a proper story and deliver it convincingly...

Yup, old keys will do, since your cutting to the deepest cut, any old key can be made into a bump
I put a six pin codemachine cut bumpkey for american padlock into a brinks lock yesterday, and it stuck, wouldn't come back out. I made a shim out of a piece of that coilspring steel thats inside a tapemeasure, and there was just room to push this in beside the key and lift the pins away, so it came out.
