SSSR is the same as CCCP right? The english spelling was USSR (United Soviet Socialist Republic.) If you made your picks with files only and no grinder, that is very impressive. Most people here like to use a dremmel or other rotary tool.

I used to make my picks with needle files, regular sized files, and a bench grinder. Started off with just 1 file and a lighter, 2 pairs of pliers.
I miss making them that way sometimes, but the dremel is so much faster - and i have a couple of study partners who are learning along with me, but they are the farthest thing from mechanically inclined - actually one is afraid of machinery.
I like nicholson brand files, large and small - i've always used them, find them reliable. i have some older files that I have no idea what they are - other than they are as old as I am, and still in excellent shape.

After trying a variety of different files, I avoid buying non-swiss files wherever pososible. So far, it's worked out very well for me.

with ace hardwares, soviet style planned economy store, its hard to find good swiss files anymore, ace carries the standard 6 files, take em or leave em. Might try "rio grande" alburquerque, the jewelers supply cataloge store.

Sweet array of files as said i don't have time to file them down so i dremel the rough out then fine tune as long as you quench theres no big diff... although your files will come in handly when rounding edges.. i bought a set of regular needel files and a set of diamond needle or something files for more rough edges, also when finishing before sanding polishing and buffing spray some lude on the files the marks become more suttle and easyier to sand out
