So I asked a Locksmith....

This is the old Locksmith business info area and will be broken down to fill in the new sections below.

So I asked a Locksmith....

Postby unlisted » 28 Jun 2006 21:16

At work today (I work in a Federal Gov't place- securities division) I saw a locksmith replacing some locks. I figured I would see how hard it was, so I walked up to him, flashed my ID and asked how much for some 999 keys.

He looked up at me and smirked, and here was his reply: "Do you want the tip and shoulder filed a bit off, sir? Do you need a small hammer also?"

I started laughing, and said "sure." He than went on to tell me how often he is asked for this "cut" and he will not provide it to anyone. He would cut it for me he said, seeing what I do for a living. So now I have to attend his store sometime, and pick them up. Nice guy also, hes planning on selling me his "HPC Blitz" machine, (Powered Medeco type) in November if I have the $$$.

So, networking and asking questions is good...

Now, does anyone know how much a used, powered HPC Blitz should run me?

Depends on the condition of the blitz and the # of cards and cutters that come with, but no more than $1200-$1500 CND

If he's willing to sell it however, make sure to check it over verrrrrry careful for alignment, condition, setting, and operation.

Best of luck with that. 8)

That's kinda cool. At least way your wife/partner can't call you five minutes before you go home and send you off to the supermarket with a mile-long list of groceries to get.

"Honey, you know, if I gave you that number, I'd have to kill you."
Due to financial limitations the light at the end of tunnel has been turned off until further notice.

UWSDWF does bring up a good point, ( I DID sign some papers...) It is not a "Security Badge." Heck, according to the government, we are not a security firm... we are not licensed as security guards/ officers...

All I can say (I don't know about UWSDWF work policies, we work for the same parent company, but are at different contracts) is I work for a federal agency, securities division. And no, I do not carry a gun.

Back to the topic at hand....

If the machine is in good shape and comes with 200+cards and 3+cutters, buy it. 8)

Are the cards used for that machine the ones you can download from HPC online?

I havent looked recently but they used to have a lot of such things on various sites, i know ive got a set of sheets for auto's from there.

I was wondering, what is the way I could tell, by looking at the machine, if it is in good shape? In other words, what should I be looking at/for?

Thanks for the assistance.

Hmm, in my mind, "securities" is a financial term. Like stocks and bonds. Is there a difference in Canadian English?

If your not too versed up on such things there is a few things you can do,

Firstly ask him to cut you a key for 2 or 3 locks while you watch, if he simply clamps the key in, cuts it and it works chances are its ok,

Look at the slideways for dents or excessive wear,

Hold the clamps and see if you can wiggle the holders on the slideways, if you can twist them they are a bit worn,

See if the cutter has all its teeth and feels sharp,

Just use common sence, if it looks rough and not been treated well then it probably is and hasnt been.

You're right, even in Canadian English the word "securities" has a much different meaning than the word "security". If someone came up to me and told me they worked in the "securities" division, I would assume they were a bean counter... :D

If you guys actually worked for CSIS, the CSE or any part of the DND, or the RCMP Security Service, you wouldn't come online bragging about it. Simply saying what you've said in this thread would get you fired. At least I hope that my fellow countrymen who DO actually work at those places would have more sense than that!

never bragged and no you wouldn't be fired unless you broke the oath of secrecy some how and you can look forward to charges and possible treason related one. Other then that as long as I don't say what organization I belong to it's of no concern. My company is a federally mandated one but not a government organization... but i do thank you for calling me a liar.. I mean I really appreciate that it makes me feel like truly welcoming you and helping you along with lockpicking and the community. That was just so nice of you!
