On a related note, I've been finding that
cabinet scrapers (available from most wood-working shops) are a fantastic base for pick material. They're typically made from
very hard spring-steel (up to Rc53), and sold in 6"x2" plates that range anywhere from 0.2mm to 1mm in thickness. The 0.25mm sheets are nice, as they're half the thickness of a standard SouthOrd pick (0.5mm), offer a lot of lateral flexibility, and still have lots of strength for pin-lifting. Having to cut the sheets into strips is a little extra initial work but, once you have, the material is quite nice to work with...
