ABUS Plus cutaway

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

ABUS Plus cutaway

Postby mh » 7 Jul 2006 15:20

Here's another suggestion on where to cut an ABUS Plus (89/40) padlock, so that it still works, but you can have a nice view on most of the discs, and see how the mechanism operates.

The first and last discs are not visible, and that's where the sidebar still blocks. But all the rest has been cut away.

In this picture the correct key has been inserted and turned about 135 degrees. Therefore, the sidebar is already in the notches and moved out of the blocking position.

Hope you like it. :)

And if you like more info or pics, tell me what you are interested in.

Cheers,

A hacksaw, some files, some drills and a Dremel. And a caliper, of course :)
And some luck, as this was the first and only ABUS plus I had, and at first I didn't know how to open it... :)

Here is mine I did. I'm posting it here since you linked to this thread in the 'breakdown' thread.

The lock is an Abus 88/50 - the same mech as that done by mh.

Well done on the cut-away mh... some wet&dry sandpaper would make that look REALLY nice. :)

Hi Ben,

Your cutaway is great, too!
I wonder how you can see the sidebar action, though. Is the sidebar on the left or on the right?

And how did you make the plug stick back in the lock? Or is that a rekeyable version?

Cheers,

Look to the right of the plug - you should see a sliver of brighter metal sticking out - that's the plug. :)

The lock was a rekeyable version... I'd have had a hard time making it were it not.

You can't really see the gates alligning since the part cut-away is on the wrong side, but when the plug turns you can easily remove the sidebar and see the gates aligned.

Illusion, that truly is great work, but you should work on the background. The dictionary was really nice. :)

Well, mine was not, and yes, I did have a hard time. You don't see the hole I had to drill on my picture, as that's on the other side...

Hmm... If I look to the left of the plug, I could see something that looks like the sidebar. Does that fall out when turned?
On mine I left material on the top and on the bottom, so the sidebar is held in place.

Yeah, if you turn the plug with the lock held upside-down then the sidebar does fall out - it's a consequece of exposing all of the discs I'm afraid. :(

Aqua, considering how much difficulty I am having getting my camera to focuss right now, you;'ll be lucky if you can even see the background. I think I just need a new cam. That photo was taken before my camera started dying, and I had been taking photos of templates the same day, so just used the squared paper since it was close-to-hand. :)

Cool to see you back Aqua. :)

I've had the same problem with my cheap digital-cam. It took 60-70$ to get it back into shape. (It was worth 120$ 2 years yearlier, so it wasn't a totally fair trade). It's a good thing that digital cameras come nearly for free nowadays...

Glad to be back, Ben. I wasn't away for that long, anyway. I simply get away from this crowd every once a while.

Ps. Ever thought about using one of those other sigs? I really recommend the one with the feather.... :)

Ps2. I'm still working on my English :D
