great material for making picks!

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

I agree with everyone that said steel is a better material for making picks than aluminum. I just wanted to express in certain cases steel is out preformed by aluminum. I would never even consider aluminum as a choice for making picks. It's good to see that so many people on this site are so well educated or are willing to learn new things. I would like to personally thank everyone for sharing information and for keeping level heads throughout this conversation.

I haven't seen anyone mention a 'drain snake' yet, (or if they have, I missed it).

About 3 metres of 1/4inch wide * 1/32 thick spring steel used for unblocking sinks, etc.

About AU$2-00 for the chinese copies.

I just made my first set of picks. I like them a lot more than the ones that I bought, not only because I think they work better but also because I made them... I used butter knives.

Simply use a grinder to shape the pick, and then if you like dip the handle of the knife in some grip goo. for a nice handle.
Total number of times I have successfully picked any lock: 3

Total number of unique locks picked: 2
