Hi everyone. Just joined & have a lockpicking question.

Postby Jason Jones » 11 Jul 2006 12:42

Hi
just joined. My names Jason, im 34 & I live in the United Kingdom.
I Recently bought 2 lockpicking sets (20 piece standard set & 9 piece
slim line set both made by southord). lockpicking has always interested me so I finally decided to buy a couple of sets. I can pick most house hold cylinder locks & most padlocks,
but im having difficulty picking UPVC door locks, I can only pick 1 out of 6 of my upvc doors. Is there particular pick or tecnique that works best for these type of locks? Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Jason

Some of those locks can be very hard to pick, I have Gege locks on my doors and they are quite tricky. They can be picked however. Learn feel / overcome spool and security pins if you have not already, and keep trying (Note dont pick locks you rely on - you could ruin them) You also have to pick the lock upside down, which you may not have done on normal cylinders and need to get used to.

What make are they? Any photo?

Also have a look at the keys, the more high low variation in the cuts the harder it will be to pick.

Jamie.

Not sure of the make & havent got a digital camera, I think its made by LSH.
Im used to picking locks upside down (I assume you mean with the pins on the bottom). All I know about these locks is that there 6 pin.
I can pick most 5 pin cylinder locks in anything from 10 seconds to 4 minutes.
I have 1 yale security 6 pin lock & that takes me anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 full hour to pick (I find it quiet tuff).
Thanks
Jason

The Yale will have spools.

Are you trying to rake or pin pick? If you are picking 6 pin yale's then keep at it varying the tension (very light works best on these for me) and you should get it!

Hard to say anything else without knowing the lock. Maybe you could take one apart?

I've opened the 6 pin yale lock 6 times now(the last time took me an hour). I find using a saw pick works best while moderatly repeatedly raking over the pins works best for me.
Thanks for your advice

Get used to single pin picking your Yale with a hook. The saw rake is a bit hit and miss sometimes. Once you can feel the spools, and open the yale this way try your euro again.

Another tip is to get some wet and dry paper and make your picks as smooth as possible. SO are good tools but aren't finished great (burrs etc)

Thanks Jamie
Purchased a upvc lock today and hav been practicing for about 4 hours
now & im finally learning the best tecnique to open them.
I've been using a rake pick to set each individual pin.
I find the most important thing is to apply very little tension on the
tension bar as I find with this type of lock you really have to feel for the
slightest bit of movement in the tumblar.
Thanks again
Jason
