The Ultimate Padlock

Postby devildog » 11 Jul 2006 2:42

Ok, I have a fetish for cutaways and padlocks, those are my favorites, and I know we've had a few threads, some with polls, asking what people would put on their door (I ran one--abloy won, not surprisingly), but I don't think there's been one on padlocks yet, so why not.

Which one and why, if you please.

Oh, and I'll take a fully shrouded Rotalok with an Abloy Protec cylinder, BTW :D

How about the 833C, the Abus Rock, or perhaps this DOM ix-10 KG padlock??

I chose the Ingersoll, since I just really like them. I guess they're not the most secure since they *can* be picked, but heck, they're cool. :)

I'll bet Medeco gets a lot of votes...

Awesome post, hats off to you.

Medeco Shrouded Shackle (the big one) is the top voted one so far, -- this is a post that I can appreciate because I am looking for a good padlock, have not found one yet - hopefully this will help narrow my choices down to something fesible.

I like the Americans, too, and as a matter of fact I'm going to be getting 3 of their biggest and baddest padlocks soon--American 748's :D . Got 3 of them in the auction below, can't believe they went for so little, they've got a retail value of $90 a pop. If you're interested in getting one, I will only be keeping one of them and selling the other two off on ebay in about a week or so once I get them.

The only problem with Americans is that if you want high-security, you'll have to change out the cylinder in them to a high-security one like Medeco or Schlage Primus.

If you want a good high security padlock, I'd recommend grabbing the fully shrouded Ingersoll that's on ebay right now, it's brand new, and should probably run you about $40-75. A good shrouded medeco would be a good choice as well, but they don't seem to come up too often.

The Medeco Shrouded Shackle may be winning at the polls, but I would write-in the Brink's Shrouded Padlock for the simple reason that for $10 at Walmart the average person can have a very secure padlock. It is the low-priced winner in my humble opinion, and has given the best of us a headache to pick.

I would have to say that the best bang for your buck is the American 700, and I think a lot of lockies would agree. The Brinks isn't bad, but the tolerances are nowhere near as good as a American. I would say it's the only decent lock Wal-Mart carries.

Its got to be either the Abloy, Chubb AVA or Ingersoll for me. I voted the ingersol as well although I know it can be picked (Although not by me, I can't even pick the 6 lever ingersol padlock yet which I bought on E bay! yet alone the 10 lever lock!)

Cheers

Well, being worried about someone picking your ingersoll because it 'can' be picked is like being worried about someone picking your Medeco because it 'can' be picked, as it can which zeke has demonstrated. But, the number of people in the entire U.S. who can pick a medeco in a reasonable amount of time you could probably count on both hands, and I'd say the same thing goes for the Ingersoll.

Now that we didn't win the soccer cup, I had to vote for a German product - the ABUS Granit.
But honestly - I just acquired a set of 3 of them (shrouded) - they are strong heavy beasts. True, their ABUS Plus mechanism can be manipulated with the right tools, but it's still difficult, and destructive attempts will probably take quite a long time...

I thought that there wasn't anything out for the Abus Plus mechanism yet, just the old one could be manipulated with the Falle-Safe tool.

Say, does Schlage make any padlocks that utilize the Primus mechanism, like their version of Medeco's shrouded-shackle line? Seems to me that they would, since the Primus system is supposed be something that can be fully integrated for everything you need to lock and all; you know, you can have Primus deadbolts, kiks, kiks with regular schlage cylinders that don't need the extra security but are pinned to work with the Primus key, SFIC stuff, regular mortise cylinders, etc. that all run off the same Primus key. Just seems like they'd have a padlock.

Yes, I believe they have a padlock. You could always put a primus IC core in a rotalok, too. :)

Rotaloks take euro half-profiles, not SFICs. And when I can have a Protec or a 3KS I just don't think I'd consider the Primus (excellent system, just not at the level of a Protec, MCS, or 3KS).
