A plug spinner allows you to open locks that you have picked the wrong way. It very quickly turns the plug passing the shear line fast enough so that the pins remains set and you can open the lock. Hope that helps.

well, first of all, if you'd have poked around, you would have found all the info i'm about to tell you re: plug spinners... having said that, i will continue.

sometimes a lock is easier to pick in the direction that actually secures (locks) the lock. when this occurs, you pick it in the easy (locking) direction, then use your plug-spinner to rotate the plug (quickly) back the other (UNlocking) direction so fast that the picked pins don't have time to drop back down and relock the unlocked lock.

confused now? so am i. (run-on sentences do that to me.)

Not really. They will leave small scratches on the inside of the keyway, but nothing really in the way of damage. Even if it doesn't work when you give it a spin, the pins will stop rotation and everything will be fine.

Only exception I can think of is possibly wafer locks. I've never tried, but I suspect that a failed attempt at spinning the plug could possibly damage a wafer. Not sure on that tho.

Wafer locks spin just the same, as there is more material in the direction of force they dont tend to get damaged but a cheap wafer may sometimes get the edge slightly worn if its done a few times,

It all depends on the quality of the lock, and how you use the spinner, I suspect.

If your spinner doesn't automatically stop rotating after a certain point, you may be able to spin the lock too hard. Or, if you spin it repeatedly and fail, you might cause a lot of sideways force on the pins. Both of these could, in theory, lead to wear or breakage if the lock is made out of very soft metal or plastic.

We have seen cheap locks that quickly deform when being picked, but we generally don't consider picking as significantly damaging to a lock. Plug spinning is the same-- practice until you know how to do it with minimal force.
