Training Gauntlet

I'm going to get myself this set of lockpicks and then make myself a training gauntlet for me to use whilst on MSN.

I'll get 5 yale locks with 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 pins in them (the others removed) from eBay or somewhere, and mount them on/in a plank of wood, so they stand up easily, and I can pick them in a sort of real life situation, where they're attached to something representing a door.

So I'm wondering how I do this? What EXACTLY shoudl I search for on eBay? The eBay link for locks is located here. If someone would be so kind as to tell me what to search and look for, I'd be VERY grateful. I mean, I dont know exactly what to look for. These things dont obviously have to actually LOCK onto anything, they just have to be pickable and able for me to turn them, AS IF they were real locks, but they dont have to be an actual lock, if you know what I mean.

Also, would it be easy for me to fanny about removing the pins from the locks I get? Or would it be best for me just to search for locks with removed pins on eBay?

Only get the one,

Remove all the pins bar 2 by reading Illusions repinning guide then read Digital Blues single pin lockpicking exorcise and try picking it,

When your good at feeling that add another pin and so on,

Fine by me, as shrub said start with the easiest marjority locks form where your from, as some people come on here and say i want to pick locks so i need to know how to pick an medeco, you set up and theory on learning by a building block system is great, depending on your funds by a small repinning kit off ebay and when your comfortable with picking normal pins, repin the locks starting at two pins 1 normal 1 spool/serrated/mushroom. ect ect. this will help you with neg. plug rotaiton and allt he goodies that come along with a hgih securtiy lock, then after that build up. Best of luck buddy also be sure to check out shrubs stickied guide, he explains the finer points of finishing of picks, and belive me SO's will need some filling and sanding, so read that guide, this will make picking easier.

Thankyou both for your help, ubt I find myself falling at the first hurdle. I bought the Yale lock you suggested, and It's came, all packaged well, with 2 keys for use. However, I cant for the life of me work out how to open the thing. I'm using illusions guide, found here, and he says Before you are able to remove the plug from the lock you first need to remove a small circle-like piece of metal that keeps it in place. Anything small enough to fit in and lift it up is fine, there are several tools you can buy, but a tension wrench works well I find.

Well, that's the problem. I cant, for the life of me, remove that little circle of metal. My lockpicks should be arriving within a week from www.lockpickshop.com, so I'm making do with screwdrivers and pins for the time being. I've shoved a pin in, but I dont quite understand WHICH way that little circle of metal is meant to move, in order that it pings off. I'm sure once I've got it once, I'll be able to do it a thousand times, I just need to more fully understand HOW i remove that bigup flat piece of metal, by removing the circular ring. [/url]

Oh, and I should mention that I'm actually not to worried about re-pinning the locks to fit other keys or antyhign, I just fancy removing 2 or 3 of the pins, then putting it back together again so I can have a 2, 3, 4 pin lock to practise on, without jumping straight into a 5-pin.

hmm... the new Yale locks aren't hard to take apart, but the old ones can be tricky.

Afraid not, not until I can beat my sister up and take her digital camera anwyay. It's not old though, I bought it less than a week ago, and it arrived in blister packaging and all that. It looks exactly the same as the one in your guide, except i'm assuming the one in your guide is an 'after' picture, as my one has another tiny circular piece of metal inbetween the thick piece of metal that rotates as you turn the key, and the main lock itself.

I think what you're describing is the snap-ring; this prevents the cylinder from falling apart. You can see an image of a snap-ring here:

If so, these are normally removed with snap-ring pliers. Here's a random link, compliments of Google:

If you're just removing a couple of snap-rings, it may not be worth it to buy a dedicated pair of pliers... just hook something (e.g., a bent paperclip) into the snap-ring's holes and pull them apart: this will expand the ring, and allow it to slip off. (Note, however, that it's often much harder to put a snap-ring back on than it is to take one off...) :wink:

I see that you've read the note about needing a plug follower... just make sure that you're careful when removing the plug, or you'll end up losing some springs and drivers that you will likely later want to have.

I found some "Snap Ring Pliers" off eBay for Â£3.48, including P+P. Considering the fact that i almost killed myself trying to get the thing off with a screwdriver, I think I'll splash out and order it. Thanks for the help.

So, you're implying that I should prehaps exercise care with my Snap Ring Pliers, for fear of damaging various appendages of my body in horrific maiming accidents that will no doubt be humourous to everyone who hears about them? :lol:

Nah.. I had Jordy on MSN and he was trying to remove WinkHaus circlips using a screwdriver.. he slipped and stabbed himself in the leg... the swearing in text can have 10X the impact of words if done properly lol.

off topic: you have to have a lot of reason to swear if you're willing to type it out when you're in that much pain - it means a hundred times more!

I have a couple cylinders here with the snap ring in front of me...but I cant be bothered to take a picture. Neither of the rings have holes in them that the snap pliers would work on, they do however have an internal notch (along the inner circumferance of the ring opposite the open end) to stop them rotating in place.

To remove them, I hold it the cylinder firmly in a vise (or my hand if I want to stab myself), with the opening of the ring facing AWAY from me, then with something hard/metal (like a flat screwdriver), held like a knife in 4 fingers; pointing the same way as my thumb, put the tip on one edge of the ring, and use your thumb to squeeze the metal ring off. I need to get pictures.
