Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

kwickset question

Postby CVScam » 16 Jul 2006 7:18

I need to remove a kwickset double deadbolt cylinder from a door my friend wants me to NOT damage the lock. Each cylinder has 1 wierd shaped screw I can't seem to remove. What seems strange to me even the outside cylinder has a screw. I have never seen a kwickset made like this before.

I thought this was comprehensive, but it doesn't show any strange screws:

Do you have a picture? (I know you have a camera :) )

I know the strange screws you're talking about. Simply use a flathead screw driver, it will work. Once you get everything off the door try to keep it in some order of placement, although you can figure it out later, sometimes it can get confusing.

Here is a picture of the outside.

I tried a every flathead screwdriver I own and used as much pressure as I could. I can't get even one the 4 screws on the 2 cylinders my friend has them on front and back door, he wants to not damage them because he is a renter. It is a house and he has the permission of the landlord but the landlord wants them reinstalled if he moves. Here is a picture of the one on the outside on the back door, it is a standard 5 pin kwickset key. If you look at the second picture you can see the scratches I have already put on that screw I guess I will just drill it.

Those are tamper resistant screws. They are filed down on the top like that so they can be screwed in like normal, but it is difficult to remove them as there is nothing for the screwdriver to grip onto. If you simply deepen the screw notch with a Dremel or similar tool you can then unscrew it.

Since this is a double sided deadbolt, you would want these screws on both sides. If only one side had screws, someone could simply remove the screws and remove the lock. Having screws on both sides will not give someone access to do that, regardless of what side they are on.

Take a 6 or 8 inch "C" clamp and clamp the face of the inside and out side cylinder, squeezing the door a little to take some pressure off the screws. The screws should now come out with a standard flat blade screw driver.. if that doesn't work.. tighten the clamp some more until you can get a small pair of vice grips on the screw head ... they will come out then.
you will need to replace the screws.. you can try home depot ... but your local lockshop probably has them.

take a regular screw driver and center it on the slopes right in the middle
then tap the back of the scredriver with authority but not like a meat head

one of two things will happen

the screws will rotate ccw as your thrust will be converted to torque be the slopes

or you wil create a flat spot in the screw head that will allow you to turn it out regular.

Removal of this type of screw is not usually a problem, use a good quality screwdriver that fits the screw properly and has a good edge. Seat the driver straight in line with the screw and you should get it. I like the idea of the C clamp I will make note of it should one of these screws give me too much trouble

I used a C clamp and it worked great I was able to replace the deadbolts. These deadbolts are so well used I can rake them in one pass.
