Hey,
I need to learn how to pick a master lock no. 3. (It's not as evil and mischevious as it sounds, trust me.) So I need some schematics and can't find them here or on google..
Is it a pin-tubler? if so - how many pins?
or is it like this: viewtopic.php?t=13443
(hopefully...)
or can i use shims..
etc.
Oh and I should note: I'm new to this but am starting using a pin and tumbler and stuff, just a master lock no 3 is my first "real goal".
thanks, just looking for help on picking it.

Well, if the No 3 is your goal, you're in luck!
They're stinkin' easy, as far as pin tumbler locks go. It's a 4 pin. It is about as basic as they come. If you haven't yet, read the MIT Guide to Lockpicking (click my sig image).
I'm currently on record for having picked one in "test conditions" in 1.6 seconds (cough cough.. brag brag...), so even for a novice, it shouldn't be too hard.
Good luck and let us know how you fair!
Happy picking!

wow thanks for the response, and it sure is reassuring to know that it is easy.. at least for most people.
I am getting a 5 pin tumbler within a couple of days and making some homemade picks and a torque/tension wrench, so then i can get started working my way up pin by pin starting at 1.
thanks a lot! lovin the forums
ps: oh yeah, i read the MIT guide and well.. pretty much everything i could find. i read the crypto notes, greg's introduction, like 40 threads on this forum, howstuffworks articles, etc.
thanks.

You can cut down on the 1.6. Have you seen the videos from the competition... one of the European ones, where they dart in and out in one motion and the lock opens in under a second? Not too difficult with a #3. A snake wrake works, so does a half diamond. You just have to get the increase in tension and the upward pressure on the pins right. Set some on the way in, get the rest on the way out.
The problem is starting and stopping a stopwatch too.

But what you forget is that this was done during a test, with very specific limitations. I only had two tries (would have had three, but I was successful on the first two so the third wasn't needed), and I got 1.6 and 1.9 sec. I'm sure I could have cut that time down if I had tried a whole bunch of times and recorded each.

I was sure I was faster then 1.6, SURE. But I didn't know what test conditions were. darn you getting my hopes up. and such.
I just got my pick set in the mail, it's really nice. One of the master locks I just push the pick in and it unlocks, I don't even have to pull it out. Faster then a key

I second that.. shimming it? Why? Shimming them is easy if oyu want to pick it ok.. but seems your trying to get this thing open awfully quick.

haha no i was just wondering what types of ways can be used to open that kind of lock. I thought shimming was only possible on a masterlock turn dial, but now i realize im wrong.
I also wondered what it looked like inside becuase i didnt even know if it was a pin tumbler, i thought it might have been the kind that uses a skeleten key to open.
thansk for all your help.

no i agree with raccoon. usually when someone new comes on and wants to open a certain lock, within certain time, its because they onmly have X number of days while the neighbor is gone, etc. i sense something fishy too. otherwise he would have been, hey how do you open a masterlock? it says no.3 on the bottom and i dont know if it has security pins or anythinig? anything i should know about this lock? thanks...
but mccammog seems to just want to open it as fast as possible.
ps- you cant tell what kind of lock it is if the shackle is opened. however it is pretty easy to tell what kind of lock it is by PEERING IN THE KEYHOLE. typically, at least, thats how i do it, if i see pins then it is a pin tumbler, maybe security pins, depending on the brand and model. if i see flat plates then its probably a wafer lock. etc etc.
by the way, i have never seen a disc lock, and teh other day i found one! of course, its attached to private property, so its hands off, but i looked at it just to see inside the keyway- it was cool- i wouldnt even know where to put my pcik if i owned it anyways, but yeah cool to see.
lastly, does anyone know where the word tumbler comes from? i mean, the pins are obvious, but the tumbler? is it just the motion of the plug turning? just a random question there.

Well i will remain open, yes it did sound shadey, but maybe he jsut doesn't knwo i was there already, i thought i was the best and ready for CIA when i opened my 3 disc brinks fire box.. but we all learn.
Just a none condemming word of advise buddy.
Try to be more careful with words and structure, i knwo it sounds a bit snobbish, but really in here since i have been here i have seen alot of goo trys at trying to do dumb stuff.
The best is, I have bought a (insert vending machine, atm or something that holds money and is locked) from a (insert auction or anyhting else) How do i open it what do i need.... and i need to do this fast!... can't wait to get those sodas in there!!!
So just try and research and such and post better posts.
But for your question and good rake like the s Rake L rake any rake will open one... or a pick gun.
Good luck with you new hobby, and stay legal, or stock up on some KY
