Picking lock with (I think spools)

I am trying to pick the Abus 84/45.

I have looked around on websites researching the lock and it said it would cost around 17-20 dollers. I am guesing that much of an expensive lock has some sort of spools. I do not have a pickset or grinder so I pick using a long, thin peice of metal no shape. is there a certain way to pick past a spool? I havent been able to pick a lock pin-by-pin by checking wich is binding the most but this one seems very hard, anyone have any tips for me on this or somthing I should do to help me?

to get past a spool first you gotta find the pin that is a spool, then you use really light tension to push the pin up.

can I tell which one is a spool by looking at it with a flashlight? and of course like pushing up the ones infront of it.

hrm... you might be able to tell if it's a spool pin, not really a good method to use though. if it snaps into place really quickly and there is alot of give in the tension wrench afterwords, then it's probably a spool pin (or something similar, like a serated or mushroom pin).

I understand you're probably somewhat new to lockpicking, and sight is one of the things you are going to use when picking. This however, isn't really recommended.. touch should be what you focus on. I suggest getting a kwikset deadbolt (with key ways on both side, so you get two locks in one!), from Home Depot or Lowers or something similar... they run about 15$ US. These you can easily take apart, and can easily take the pins out of them and start out picking with 1 or 2 pins, and work your way up. This way you can learn to feel each individual pin, and you'll be able to tell when it sets.

No. Spool pins are top pins.

Also be aware that the spool pins are placed randomly in these locks, so that it wouldn't be possible to suggest that the spool pins are most likely to be in positions 2 and 4 or whatever.
