Just starting, got the tools need a little help

Alright, I have a basic set i suppose... I have a weird tension wrench though, mine kind of looks like this. Notice how it splits into two. Yeah mine does that, it's a bit small i'd guess 3 or 4 inches at the most, very flexable but is it suppose to be used for normal locks? The one on the site that displays that picture suggests it's for cars.

Anyways i've been working on a lock(hardened 50mm) Looks like this with the 8 little circles on top. I'm kind of borrowing it from someones storrage shed in my apartment set that they happened to leave it open. It doesn't looked damaged in anyway and i plan on returning it and i locked it so i need a little help. First off i'd like to know if that tension wrench would work, and if it does, where should i put it on the bottom the side the top?
Second i've been practicing and messing around with it for probably 5 hours alltogether and i haven't opened it once. I've been using "the finger" as the pick and i can feel/hear the either 4th one or the 5th one with the most tension. I've pushed that one up and i even thought i've heard it capture above the line a couple of times and when that happened i tried turning hte lock and nothing. Is there anything i need to do after i push the pin with the most tension on it?

The site is correct, who would have thought so. This type of tension wrench (usually called "two-pronged tension tool") is actually made for wafer locks, because when picking these it is usually beneficial to have the keyway as free as possible, because one might have to work on both sides of the keyway to pick the lock. Hence this design, which allows to tension the plug uniformly while keeping it free as good as possible. The reason the say "cars" is that a lot of car locks (all?) are wafer locks, but that is pretty much everything I can say about that in the public forums.

Kind of borrowing? Froms "someone"? Left open? Plan to return? OK, so you don't know the person obviously, you took it because it was unlocked. You were essentially stealing it. Return it immediately, no matter if locked or unlocked. Otherwise that would definately be theft.

It was essentially a joke on the borrowing part. Anways... I guess i don't have much luck picking the lock then? Perhaps i should buy a new tension wrench? Any suggestions?

Just wondering what a good beginner but something that would last and would fit in most locks, tension wrench would be.

WOW you guys are blowing this way out of proportion. IT IS MY lock, i just said borrowed because it sounded cool wow they are you happy you chastized me so much i feel like the tower of patrinization. Lock the thread and ban me? All i wanted was a little help, maybe now if you have some respect in the littlest manner you could help me out.

Hmmm seems like a back track to me, if it isnt yours you have stolen it,

But ill give you some benefit of the doubt and give you some advice,

The wrench you have shown is not suitable for that lock, its for wafer locks mostly,

Use a wrench that is a simple L shape and place it in the bottom of the keyway,

Have you read the MIT guide? if not go have a read of it, you can find it by reading the stickies in the faq's, then read Digital Blues thread on begineres exorcise's,

You have to do thing in a methodical manner if your struggleing finding the pins mark off your pick with a marker while its next to the working key, this way you can see where the dept ogf the pick is at in the lock, as its your lock youll have the key to do this,

Hey thanks that really helped, i used a z wrench(i'm not sure what it's called it's exactly like a z tension wrench but it's a lot bigger) that is probably too big for most locks but i lucked out because the whole key thing helped. The key was on top of my door and i forgot it put it there untill i dusted :S. I assumed that the highest "notch" on the key is the pin that requires the most tension then? But anyways thanks for your help.

I've got that torque wrench, and I'd say it's OK. If you are already planning on placing an order, you might as well add it on. But you can make your own for free from the metal inserts in old windshield wiper blades. Different wipers have different sized inserts, so a variety of wipers may get you a variety of sizes to make some tools from.

A good selection of torque tools is just as or more important than the pick selection. If you can’t properly torque the lock, it’s just not going to open. I have a variety of different torque tools I ordered on lockpicks.com, but some of my favorite ones are just those I made out of wiper inserts.

Hmmm... Well, let me try: "I am sorry I blew this totally out of proportion. I was typing this away on a laptop I am kind of borrowing from someones computer trade show booth that they happened to leave unsecured and unattended". Yup, it sure sounds cool that way. It also is real big fun typing all that stuff, even though it is just made up. And maybe I was blowing this out of proportion because I have to look over my shoulder all the time so no one gets to me about the laptop.

Here you are even giving a theory as to why it was left unlocked and destroy it at the same time ("keyway doesn't look damaged" -> assuming that the lock was left open due to damage of the lock). And you stick so much to your funny and cool "borrowing" part that you state you plan to return the lock unlocked. That sure is cool as well.

Look if you want to condem me for whatever you believe do it somewhere else. How about you grow up and stop mocking me. This forum is for helping stop flamming and spamming. Just because you don't understand something or your "beliefs" cause you to think different doesn't mean subliminal chaos should go about. I would also like to mention that even if something like this did happen the mature thing to do would be to forgive him as long as he doesn't do it again or knows it's wrong. Don't you think by now i would of said alright guys i'm really sorry for causing all this i'll put it back i learned that it wasn't mine. Now it proabably wouldn't be that formal but i would of said something along the lines of that if it really wasn't mine.
