Good Afternoon,
I'm new to the forum, but have been learning how to pick since last summer. I'm having the worst time ever opening a Master No.532 chrome steel lock. I have to say it's the nicest looking padlock I've ever had, very nice finish on it, but I can't open it at all. Pin 1 is very high, so any of my picks move it down and I think that's causing the problem. I'm using a Southord MPXS-11 set with a feeler/hook pick.
Does this lock use any security pins? I can open the Master No.3 in seconds and the brass body No.150's in seconds also, and most Kwikset knobs, but maybe this No.532 is above my skill level. Sorry for lack of picture at the moment.
Thanks for any tips!

Welcome to the No.532 club lol. I consider myself as a medium lockpicker and this lock can take me about 10-15 minutes to pick. All I can say is a good tensioner is required for this one, or else it'll come off and it will be a bummer. Now bumping is something else.
Also you with wanna try to pick the No.576 first, it's a smaller version of the No.532.

I agree with master, i have never picked one but if the bitting was bad it would give me a struggle to.

A minute? Wow, that's impressive
Take a look at my 532 and it's key, is your key/pin configuration easier or harder looking than this? I have the same problem with the American Series 50 to the left, can't pick that either, single pin or raking. And I have to say the American looks like I could do it in 10 seconds but no dice.
Thanks for your advice and to know you can do it in a minute gives me new hope!

I have a couple 532's. At first I had a bit of trouble with them, but if memory serves, there is a spool pin in position 2 on both of them. Once I got comfortable with that, I can pick either in about 15 seconds pretty well every time if I use a small hook.
Have a peek and see if you've got a spool in the second position. If so, just knowing that will help loads.
Happy picking,
db

Db serves a good point, me, i am just plain lazy and would rather hold this lock becuase its lighter than the brass one. DB i chopped open my brass on thats identical to this one..tried to make a cut away failed misserably BUT! i got all the pins, its about 6 am. wait till my sister gets up so i can borrow her digi camera take some picks of the pins and post them.. ugg how manly i am, have to get my little sis to help me with my camera skills, surely and lock must be clearly terrified of my manlyness But if memory serves me right becuas ei dont feel like getting the pins now it has two standard pins and 3 spools? i think thats right, one thing that is neat to, the serrated spools and serrated bottom pins from the brinks shouded lock fit perfectly inside the masters, give them the pins in a high low and its quite a nice little challenge.

All I can say is.. FINALLY!
I got it open. slimline medium hook, pin by pin, got some rotation, loosened up on the tension, set the spool, and it opened. About 20 seconds. Man that felt good.
I'm making an LP101 iron-on t-shirt to wear at HOPE 6 tomorrow... here's the front:
the back of the shirt is my sig on a black t-shirt.

So, a couple weeks ago I had my father and step mother in town for a visit. My dad decided to leave a utility trailer parked at my house, but wanted to lock it up. He asked me if I had any padlocks. (Silly question). However... what I didn't have was any padlocks I could find a key for. So I grabbed a Master 532 and slapped it on the chain. Of course, I had to first pick the lock before I could do that. I picked it, with him standing there over my shoulder, in about 15 seconds flat, and attached ti to the chain.
The next day came and we needed to unlock the trailer. Well boy oh boy. That puppy suddenly got a WHOLE LOT HARDER to pick. We were in a hurry, wanting to get on the road and get to the cottage, and I sat there like a darned fool for over 5 minutes. I even resorted to (*sniff*) a pick gun at one point. Even that I had no success with. So, I went back to picking it and did manage it, but as I said, it took over 5 minutes to do it.
I brought the lock with me to the cottage and, as luck would have it, we needed to secure a boat trailer to a tree and needed a padlock. Well, once again, I picked it in mere seconds and slapped it on the chain. It was the next day, when we needed the lock off because someone was coming to buy the boat trailer that I discovered what just might be the WORST possible picking conditions. In the bush, in Manitoba, mid-summer, with a BAZILLION mosquitos...
For those of you who have never experienced Manitoba's mosquito population, you can't even begin to imagine what that might be like. There were, at any given moment, no less than 20 of them on my person somewhere. That was AFTER dowsing myself in bug repellant. If that doesn't throw your picking skills for a bit of a loop, I don't know what would. It took me, again, somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes, and 20 to 30 bites to get that little bugger open.
Why didn't I pick an easier lock to use in the first place, you might wonder? I dunno. I'm a sadist? I'm cocky? I'm a fool? You pick.

It has taken me a few hours but I have the tension down and think I have the feel for it now.
I seem to be able to open it under 1 min each time now.

I can crack my 532 in under 2 minutes, sometimes under 10 seconds. The best technique is to apply light tension, go in with a rake and false set it, then take the rake out and slightly relax tension and push the 2nd pin up with a medium hook. The lock will open right up, if you drop a few back pins just raise them with the hook. I consider my 532 as easy to open as a No.3 now. Probably because I have picked it to many times. I picked up some CLUB padlocks at Big Lot's today. I got a 4-pin lock with the yellow protective case and it has 3 spools in it and I got the 50mm laminated 5 pin one which is slightly trickier to open. I use a hybrid technique like on the 532, except on this one I rake it and have to then push up the first pin with a hook. I still cant crack my Brink's Shrouded padlock. I am taking this one on vacation with me next month when I go on a Caribbean cruise. I am determined to pick it! On a side note, one thing I like about the CLUB 50mm laminated padlock is that it uses dual steel ball locking instead of brass levers like most cheap locks. It has a 11/32" shackle, but I dont know how strong that is since it's probably just case hardened non-alloy. Not a bad lock for $3.49 though.
