Krypos - man I love hawaii! Been there 4 times so far, always hate to leave! The cop that responded to our call was a native hawian. Very nice and tried to explain the situation to us and the complexity in very honest terms. So needless to say that experience did not take away any thing for our love of hawaii! (good points about the car alarms, yea they would be going off a lot).

pickfish- we totally know and understand the security risks now after the fact. But previous visits to hawaii were always so pleasant I guess we were a little nieve I suppose. But even after that experience we still pretty much do every thing the same way. Both my wife and I are very heavily in to photography and while driving around we keep most of the equipment in the back seat for quick exchanges, leaving the rest in the trunk. Since it was the first time we experienced this it was kind of a shock. Actually we felt worse about the pictures we lost on film and digital which could not be replaced. We're not rich but knew our insurance would cover the equipment. While driving around hawaii and every corner a picture opportunity it would have been a real drag to keep every thing in the trunk. On the flip side we have so many pictures now that I would not feel the need to bring all my arsenal, just a couple of digitals, may be one film, 3 tripods, 6 to 8 lenses, video recorder, and what ever my wife wanted to bring :)

Summary: it sucks when ever you get burglarized, but if it's possible, it some how sucks a little less when it happens in hawaii ;)

Regards

you should have gone to kauai- the garden island, i have an uncle there that does this upper mountain garden tour thing, is really awesome. but in general, the bigger islands (as i more popular) have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more tourists, like on kauai, there is like only 40% the tourists, and the ones you do see, are all like there for the the botanical and photography sights. so its great. they all are of course, but the rest are so much more suburban-ized and more tourist set.
