R70 Brinks opened!

Postby pb2au » 24 Jul 2006 15:24

I've been a long-time lurker, and finally got into LP as a hobby by ordering a few things from South Ord. I originally couldn't believe how quickly I opened a (non-warded) master lock. I've been progressing and picking up the odd item or two on Ebay, including medeco cylinders, S&G padlocks, one of those crazy ingersol locks, etc..

So, I wanted to try some locks with known difficulties (ie security pins) and those that others suggested for the beginner/intermediate.

I had put 30 mins or so into a new R70 before with no luck, but actually trying some firmer tension seemed to do the trick. I would back it off a little (and I mean a LITTLE) every once in a while to make sure no security pins were stuck, or to release ones that I knew were stuck. I got it after about 15 mins last night, then closed it up and tried again, just to make sure it wasn't do to dumb luck... I got it in less than 5 mins on the second try.

Then I got cocky and tried my new master 6271 with no luck.

So, picked:
Master laminated (pin tubler, not warded)
Master 107 (small gun lock)
Master 50mm laminated (no model #?)
Brinks brass "ladder style"
Master brass (no model #?)
Master tiny luggage lock (still pin tumbler!) :)
Brinks R70
Master Combo (rear keyway only)
Handcuffs (pick and shim)
Schlage entry and deadbolt

Not picked:
American 1205
Master 6271
Ingersol monster with medeco cylinder
S&G 8088, 8087
Master sesame (the tolerances on mine are TIGHT)
American model 10 with blade tumbler (I've heard this is easy?)
American model 7300 (tubular)
Kaba gemini mortise
Medeco 5IS mortise

Thanks for the info that I've learned from this site!

Nice. The R70 is something of a milestone.

I just now picked the R70, too. I am actually kind of disappointed in it. It took me all of about 10 min to pick for the first time. I'm not very experienced with locks and I was hoping this one would keep me entertained (in a frustrated, bang my head on the wall, kind of way) for at least a few days. You're right about the tension thing. That spring loading does bring the difficulty up a notch. I've done a couple Masters, Brinks 50mm, Brinks deadbolt, Kwikset deadbolt, the R70 and a few other too-simple-to-claim type locks. My next is the Brinks Shrouded. I might check out the Master 6230 once that is completed.

I picked this lock up today at Walmart. I happened to be in there looking for a decent file to impression with (no such luck) and remembered how many topics had been made about the R70.

This lock is a major pain in the *ss. After working at it on and off for a total of roughly 2 hours, I finally just got it open. The feeling when it finally opens is strange. I found the best way to go about it is apply a ton of tension, I mean a LOT, then back off little by little until you can get one of those pins to move. From there I just picked it normally using roughly that amount of tension (varying a bit for the spools of course).

Will keep practicing, I hate that "maybe it was just luck" feeling. Good luck to all of you.

Congragulations!

Is the R70 this one
http://www.lockcity.com/brinks/Products ... 20Padlocks
or does it refer to a cylinder style of brinks?

I might have to look for one on my next trip to walmart.

At the shop today, my GF picked oper her first lock today- a kwikset-
and had the look that reflects that feeling JK mentioned- on her face.

i congragulated her, then told her to go tell someone, lol- which she promptly did
next best thing to picking the lock is sharing it with someone else, especially difficult or first ones

I find Kwiksets (and probably all other non-springed plugs) irritating. If I load up a my kwikset with spools, the following happens:

1) Picking as usual

2) A spool makes the plug turn more than usual. Now in a padlock, all you have to do is slowly let off the tension until you can get that ridge up and over the shear line. Simply letting off the tension in a non-springed plug, usually doesnt work. I can actually let go of the tension wrench sometimes and the pins will stay set.

3) I'm forced to actually turn the tension wrench the other way. Like I could literally remove it and then put it in flipped and not lose my sets.

I guess you could call this tension style the complete opposite of an R70. By the way, "springed-plug" probably isnt the correct terminology, anyone know what is?

Yes, that is the R70. It refers to only one lock, however at your local Walmart you might find a smaller version of the R70 with a different name. Good luck.

I may have spoken too soon. I was able to pick it in about 10min the first time and picked it again in a little under 30min the second time but haven't been able to pick it since. My key cuts are about as difficult as they can get: shallow, deep, shallow, deep. I can barely get my short hook past the 3rd pin before it sets, then I have to push the last pin all the way down to get it to set. As luck would have it, the third pin is the first to set. Well, at least I'm getting my money's worth out of it.

Is the Ace Hardware and Master lock version below the same as the R70?
If so, arent they just the master with different names?

I happen to have the ace. It has very strong springing action.
