We being locksmiths / hobby pickers should have no excuse for having crappy locks on our doors right?? :oops:

What's on yours - i'v got a crappy Yale and a legge 5 lever BS lock on the front door, and Gege euros on all the UPVC doors. I'v got a good alarm system and 2 guns if they let me down

Crappy generic jimmy-proof lock installed by landlord--that's the downside of renting, you really can't do much if you don't like the physical security setup, i.e. locks, doors, windows, alarm (or lack thereof, usually).

What WOULD I have? Well, if money were no object, probably an armored ballistic door with an Abloy Protec mortise lock with multi-point boltworks, armored windows (NIJ Level III min.), some kind of uber-cool alarm system with laser beams, microwave, ultrasonic, blah blah blah

I got 2 KIK's, they don't even have a brand name on them. Which is stupid, cause we live in a $%^tty neighbourhood. You could probabley card 'em.

Ideally, I'd want a steel door (they're currently both wood), and a decent alarm system, and a biaxial.

Front door, 1 Yale X5, 1 x chubb 114 and 1x chubb 110,

Back door, 1 3 point bolt system using a motice locks to oporate, inner door, 2 x chubb 110's

All 3 doors 1/2 hour exterior fire doors with the front one and inner rear one having steel reinforcement on the back of them, all 3 doors with 3 sets of hinge bolts and chain across door hinges fastened to the wall,

Bars over downstairs windows, top 2 floor windows lockable (i have a 3 storey house)

Anti climb grease on all window sills and axle grease painted on all bars on windows,

Big sticks at front and rear door ready for grabbing quickly

Workshop even more secure, locks on hinge side as well as opening side,

I can't find the thread anymore (was it deleted?) but I created a poll which asks how lp101 members enter their home. Among the choices were, with lockpicks whenever possible, with lockpicks to show off, with a key only (lockpicks are tools not toys), or "i don't lock my door."

MANY, at least half of you said you don't lock your doors. I don't.

sadly enough- im the Maid with the messy house, the Mechanic with the broke down POS...

I have kwikset titan 6 pin door knob and deadbolt. It does not concern me too much- I live in an apt with an open air hall, plain view of parking lots, etc- with a lot of old people who stare out the window at every odd car that rolls in, living around me.

I have a nasty habit of not locking the deadbolt behind me during the day.
I think I might resolve this by putting a passage knob on the door- I always make sure my door is locked when i leave, and this will leave me no choice but to lock the deadbolt. I considered installing one of those LSDA deadbolts, the kind you turn the face of the deadbolt and it locks- but i decided getting higher security is a priority over ease.

Luckily, I was given an used Medeco deadbolt today- I think Ill repin it, cut some keys, clean her up and toss it on.

I went to a lockout a few months ago and they just had a hasp and padlock on a upvc door because they had seen the snapping artile on the net or somewhere, they had lost their keys to the padlock so i shimed it oopen (i think the only padlock ive shimmed on the job by the way) just to prove a point lol, they then turned around and said they would simply get a combonation padlock for the future to which i just shook my head, needless to say i left them considering their options and havent heard back since,

Sometimes it amazes me the lack of consideration people give to security- or general lack of knowledge that people do not have.

But then I become less amazed when I recall that I was one of those people, not all that long ago. I threw out my original kwikset titan that was on my door- because the cylinder shell came out. yep.

And previous to working with locks- I had no clue what was in a lock, or how a key worked. I imagine if I would have thought of it, I would have figured on some sort of warded design , allowing only my house key to work- and the concept of rekeying would never have come into it lol.

Introducing ppl to the idea of rekeying is always fun- they are often quite amazed that they can get rid of the three house keys they have- and I enjoy their joy..

But on the subject of knowledge- I had a couple in a few weeks ago needing work on their latch/strike alignment-
There son mentioned to them that their locks were not all that secure anyway- and gave them a crude idea of lock picking--

they, especially the man, were completely amazed at the concept- and our confirmation of their sons warning. they were back the next week to buy up some medeco, lol.

i got a standard 5 pin schlage, not much security, but then again, not many burglars know how to lockpick

. i have some good security alarms and windows, so thats all i need.

I forgot to mention that i have security film on my downstairs glass as well,

I wont have an alarm as they seem to be ignored anyway and also any false alarm and the next time the responce will be slower and less careing to the point where when it goes off its just commented on that its next doors alarm again and life continues,
