Disc-style locks and similarities? (ie R70)

Postby pb2au » 28 Jul 2006 20:35

I currently have 3 disc-style locks in my collection. One is actually locking something, so I haven't tried to open it yet, but it's a master branded. The second is a brinks R70 that I've been able to open, and the third arrived a few minutes ago. I bought it specifically because I figured it would be hard to open (haven't even tried yet), but it's an ABUS Diskus 24/60, rated as a "7" by them on thieir packaging. My question is: Are these locks really any different? They are all pin tumbler, and they all look very similar. Is there one out there that uses a different style of lock? (i.e. blade, tubular?)

Thanks,
JD

the main difference in the abus round locks is the existence of mushroom pins- if i remember correctly.

I dont believe the Buffo style has any, while the more expensive models do.

I havent had a chance to work with a R70 (will be buying one tonight if my Walmart stocks em) not sure how they compare

What is the "Buffo" style? I just got my ABUS today, and when I picked it out online, I thought that it was one of their higher security models (7/10). I just started to play with it and I opened it in under a minute. It's only a 4-pin tumbler. Maybe I got a model that's too small?? I used a regular pin lifter tool (southord) and a standard tension wrench...

this is the buffo.

it is the bottom of the line- its best point is that it is round :o

it is four pin, without security pins of any sort, and not as hardcore as the heavier duty models.

They sell for about 15 at my shop, while the top model we carry sells around 48ish (us $)

my abus's

Postby toiletplumber » 29 Jul 2006 3:14

here are 2 abus buffo's I got at work today. My boss lost the key and said I could have them. I was wondering if they had security pins thx for clearing it up. The one on the left had white-out in it and the first pin had some on it. I got a paperclip and started trying to loosen the pin and break off the whiteout. it is better but still sticks a little do you think some wd-40 would clear it up?

wd 40 may assist-
i prefer to use tri-flow
http://www.triflowlubricants.com/

You might also try aeroKroil
https://secure.cnchost.com/kanolabs.com/kanopnlu.htm

or acetone- we use acetone when locks are glued shut to clean em out- use a plastic syringe to force it in the lock

I just checked... it's not the Buffo style that I have. It's the standard diskus, just one size smaller. The keyway does have some irritating obstructions, but it's a fun lock.

I tried picking mine the other night and got frustrated. The keyway is super small and the pick gets stuck going in and going out. I might need a smaller hook pick and maybe a smaller wrench.

i'll have to call you a liar on that one. I opened up my two 28/70 buffo diskus locks and out poped 5 pins stacks and 4 had spool pins. I have some pics on my other computer if you want to see but this puppy is definatly not a wussie. The spools aren't serrated or anthing and all of the bottom pins are normal.
