YPK Klepto 1.2 any thoughts?

Postby cnyc31 » 2 Aug 2006 9:10

Hey guys and ladies,

I'm new to this site. I live in Tokyo and I'm going to Spain for a few weeks.

I am taking my bike and I am considering buying the YPK Klepto 1.2m lock.

Here's the link,
http://www.ypkinnovations.com/Klepto_1.2.htm

Anybody have any experience with this lock? Is it easy to pick?

A couple of things I knoticed,

They sell it all over tokyo and the keys work from other "sets" from the same models, ie the same products on the shelf.

I looked into the key hole, it has a larger hole but I dont see anything comeing out to run rakes on.

I'm sure there's not enough info to assest the product and provide accurate feedback. Thought I try anyway.

Thanks in advance for critical feedback and help,

Best,

Gen

cable

Postby raimundo » 2 Aug 2006 9:17

The lock seems to be based on a modern abloy cyllinder, that should be unpickable, but are you aware that cable cutters are the direct threat to this lock. I would call it a good lock, but whether it gets cut or not depends on several things, first, whether it meets a thief with a cable cutter, whether the bike its on is thief bait, etc. so try to lock it up beside a more expensive bike that is also using a cable, or lock it up beside other bikes with less secure locks.

Most bike thieves don't pick locks I think.

That said, I do not know how well these flexible cables and chains compare to solid U-Locks when it comes to resistance against cutting. I still prefer U-Locks. It is a bit harder to find a suitable piece of street inventory to lock the bike to, but when the bike is locked to something suitable properly it might become hard for the thief to get a good attack point to the U-bar with his tools because ideally everything is tight and the lock can't be moved. His tool might therefore be useless or risk damaging the bike.

I have the problem that there are usually not a lot of more expensive bikes on the road to park next to, so I usually put the bike in a well-lit and well-visited area (lots of watchers, pedestrians, etc.) and use two U-locks to secure rear wheel+frame+sign post and front wheel+frame with the shorter lock. Apart from that, I never park it overnight, never for too long. If you are visiting friends, ask them if they'd mind you putting the bike in their basement, on the balcony or in the garage for the duration of your stay.

Again, if I had to use a flex lock, I'd look for a chain, like in this Abus product:
http://www.abus.de/de/main.asp?ScreenLa ... 3318125287

Again, I am not sure if chains are more resistant to steel cables, but I think they might be for some reason. Apart from that, I have seen electronic devices on sale that mount into your seatpost and emit a very loud when the bike is moved a little bit while the alarm is activated. This may or may not deter thieves, depending on the situation and the location the bike is parked. I think bike thieves are easier to scare by this than car thieves, because they don't expect it, and they will most likely have to move the bike a little prior to cutting the lock to get the cutters in. If the alarm sounds in this situation they might just as well run and pass on the bike. Or they might be properly pissed and come back later with an advantage... :(

Sweet lock, looks good to me. Maybe if you bought a more cheeper lock as well and secured it twice it might discourage a thief. Or just take a wheel off like in the 40 year old virgin :P

Bike Locks.

Postby CVScam » 4 Aug 2006 22:22

I saw an interview once with a former bike theif, he said he loved almost every cable lock. He showed how easy he could cut the cable without people walking near him noticing. I have seen a bar lock that was cut in half at a school. The kid left the new bike overnight at the rack with a bar lock. The bar lock was not sawed it looked like someone just used bolt cutters. It must have been a BIG set of bolt cutters.
