Paperclip usage

Postby Blindside » 5 Aug 2006 14:13

Has anyone here picked locks with paperclips? In the 5th grade my friend had this one lock and I just fiddle around with it and felt my way thru and unlocked it with 2 paperclips. I'm wondering...how many types of locks can a person unlock with just 2 paperclips?

This is a common question from those curious about lock picking. The short answer: yes you can, but it is awkward and you'd fare better buying an inexpensive pick set. Here is a thread germane to your question (it should be stickied as it is one of the top questions of newbs):

Using paperclips as lockpicking tools has been discussed and mentioned here lots of times. The consensus is - it is possible, but you still have to know what to do. If you are serious about this as a hobby they don't cut it because you can usually only use them once.

Click the "Search" button on top of the page and enter (paperclips) OR paper AND clips (just the stuff in bold) to find over hundred threads.

For more stuff you might also try (paperclip) OR paper AND clip
Due to financial limitations the light at the end of tunnel has been turned off until further notice.

The problem with paperclips is that they bend to easy which causes problems And they are otherwise annoying to use. if you want to make a makeshift feeler pick and tension wrench your much better off making them out of hair pins as those are actually made out of spring steel which is generally considered to be the ideal metal for lockpicks.

I Love Paperclips!

Postby Devs » 26 Aug 2006 7:25

Paperclips have been with me since the start, I picked my first lock with them..
I use paperclips for everything! Tool clips, zipper pulls. I even keep a few in my pick case. However I sometimes get a dirty look from a customer when I unlock their file cabnet with one then charge them for the unlock. :) -Dev

it's definitely possible, but you should use bobby pins or paper clips when you want to feel like macguyver, not as a serious alternative to proper picks.

I guess it's just comfort thing when unlocking file cabnets, a bad habit I guess. Otherwise I use real tools.
Oh, and I still use a proper tenson wrench and all but one of my customers I have done file cabnet unlocks for are very happy with my service. The one that had the problem just seemed to be unhappy with the world that day. I try to do anything I can to make a customer smile. After all, a customer that has a smile is more likely to tip! :)

What can I say, I'm strange..but in a good way. -Dev
