A wafer lock uses disc shaped tumblers (“wafers”, however there are also disc locks which operate totally differently than wafer locks, and are a high security type of lock) instead of using pins. They are common in cheap and low security items, such as filing cabinets, furniture, fire chests, bicycle locks, etc. The common low cost locks are generally very easy to rake, and ball picks are good for this.

There are also higher quality and high security wafer locks, such as Illinois Lock Company’s DUO lock or ESD’s XD, which have three sets of tumblers, and those used in car doors and ignitions, which may have a sidebar.

I hope this helps, but next time, try searching the forum or internet for such a simple question. You will find plenty of pictures for what I am talking about.
