Hey all
Well, I took apart a lighter (dont ask), and found that it contains a nice, stiff spring, that works in locks nicely. The spring is rather stiff. Here's a video on removing the spring http://s64.photobucket.com/albums/h192/unbreakable_lp101/?action=view¤t=DSCF1398.flv
It fits in a lock, and is a change that can make the lock harder to pick. Plus, they're cheap, 3 for a buck at and dollarstore, and out of each lighter you can get 3-4 springs, so thats up to 12 springs.
You can also stretch them. This allows you to vary the force it puts on the pins.
Just something for those of you looking for a change, dont know if its been mentioned before, but here it is!

you know...i wouldnt have thought of that. in fact i have never messed with a lighter before, i mean ive used them for 4th of july and whatnot, but never really played with one before. although i must say, you should be really careful when doing something like that, i do know that a lgihter will violently explode if thrown against the ground, so they are pretty vulnerable to shock. so be careful. jeez.
nice find though, on a related note, be careful when stretching springs, as i did that to the springs in one of my locks and it can make it difficult to insert, and remove the key to a lock with stretched springs.

Depending on the type of lighter, you could just use some adhesive tape to continually press down the ventile button, so the gas will stream out slowly. Put the adhesive on and store the lighter on a windowsill next to a open window for an hour. That should release the gas and the concentration of Butane/Propane will never reach anything critical doing it this way. The stuff is so volatile and needs a high concentration to ignite.
Due to financial limitations the light at the end of tunnel has been turned off until further notice.

Thank you for the original hint (not the whole thing about blowing up lighters. I go to my Anarchists forum for that, thanks.)
Now, anybody have a clue on how to make more pins? I've lost about half the pins off mt $10 kwikset, and I'm too much of a cheapy to go buy a new lock.

Have a peek in BST, post a wanted as, some of the lockies here actually keep the old pins when they rekey locks.
Some of them will give you these pins just for the shipping.

Yes, you can get the springs from a few different suppliers. The point of using the lighter spring is that it's much stiffer, and thus changes things up a bit when picking. Its not a replacement for old springs, just something new to try.

Aww, you cleaned up all the good stuff. It was slightly on topic, as it had to do with lighters.

I must say, you're pretty bad at that And as far as exploding bics, it's much harder than a jab from a screwdriver.

What are you going on about?!?
I'm bad at removing the spring from a lighter? Is that what you're trying to say?
YOu try balancing a cam between your legs and removing the cap from a bic.

actually its true
ive done this about 50 times in my life
just grab an empty or almost empty lighter, and throw it against the ground
it usually has to be thrown pretty hard unless you hit a sweet spot
heres a video i found on youtube:
