Master lock's new gimmick

Personally, I'd rather it be shim-proof than glow in the dark.

Wonderful, keep bragging boys......

Wonder how it works, Im under the impression that it uses led's? Is it on constantely?

Kinda cool concept, but Im sure its still really lacking where security is concerned.

Nah, probably the same stuff in the glow in the dark stars you stick to your roof that works by absorbing light enery during the day, and giving it off at night.

I've never seen middle-schoolers so fascinated by a combination lock.

Now that I think about it, they must be high. The squinty eyes of the kid playing with the lock confirms this.

Am I the only one that sees a slight resemblance to Kate Holmes in the girl?

I like anything with LEDs =)

but someone mentioned shimming and it got me thinking..

they could put a switch inside to detect when all 3 gates were aligned with the correct combo. at that point the small motor driven by a lithium battery would turn and undo a threaded rod that was screwed 1/8 inch into a threaded hole in the side of the shackle.

This way even if you shim it, there is a threaded rod deep inside the lock holding onto the shackle.

cost and battery life would be limiting factors.

here's a rough drawing of the motor that would drive a worm gear which would turn and move left or right either retracting the threaded tip or screwing it into the shackle.

I draw good. lol

=)

what do you guys think?

In case someone doesnt get the point of the post above this one and I know we have lots of new folks reading, the point is to stop shims from being useful. The would still work up to the point of pushing the ball bearings out of the way, but unless the correct combo is dialed in, the motor will not turn and the threaded rod will not come out of the shackle, so shims are now useless.

hope that clears things up,

Instead of screwing around with motors, why don't we just buy 8077s?

What's the point? Masterlock markets these to kids, right? I am confused as to why a kid would be at school at night when the lights are actually off. This is such a gimmick. Although it would be like a beacon of hope for bike theives, "Oh look, lets shim that one!"
