Question About Generic Door Knob Locks

Hello! I've had great success in picking pad locks, and some deadbolt locks. Recently I tried picking my door locks, the kind that has the key in the knob. I have a back garage door, and some inside doors with those locks.

I am able to pick them, and turn the wrench clockwise, but the knob is still locked! Noob here! What gives?

FYI do not pick locks you rely on and similar variations of it recur aprox. 974 times on this site....WOW

Of course I've read the warnings about not picking your own doors. So I like to live dangerously

Seriously I wasn't worried about it. I could easily replace the locks if I needed to. And like I said, they were a garage door and inside doors we never rely on any way. Please don't assume all noobs don't read every thing or are incapable of making decisions on their own. I also smoke too even though the packs say I could die

Back to topic, so are doorknob locks pickable or what?

What else is there to do? I set each pin and was able to turn the tension wrench clockwise. I can repeat this easily on each lock, yet the doorknobs will not turn.

I realize I must be missing some thing here, but I honestly do not know what else to do. I have search specifically for this topic but could not find any thing.

Would appreciate any information on what I might be doing wrong or leaving out. I appreciate your tip about learning the feel of these locks but am at loss what to feel for since the pins set so easily.

did you try turning the knob with your hand? because even if you do pick it, it wont open the door. it will be unlocked, but it wont physically swing the door open, you still have to turn the knob and pull the door open.


if that doesnt work, well then maybe since you dont rely on that door and it probably aint used too often, maybe its just crummy. go buy a KIK lock at the hardware store and then you can disassemble it and learn how it works. after all, thats why we're here right? to learn how locks and picking them works.

Yes I did try to turn the door knob, no go. It's weird I'm able to pick them but the doorknob won't turn.

Really weird that I have 3 doors like that too and same thing happens.

I do plan on replacing the garage door lock and pulling it apart. I just thought may be I'm missing some thing. Like may be have to hold the knob and tension wrench at same time while picking or who know what else. Setting the pins was easy enough. They are cheap locks that came with the house, and we use the deadbolts on the main doors, not the doorknob locks, so they never get used. Our inside doors also never get used either.

I'm here for the same reasons as you. I love working with locks but can not devote as much time as I'd like to on it. When I do I thoroughly enjoy it! I still have to spend a great deal of time on my work that pays all the bills and juggle what free time I have with our 2 year old twins that I also enjoy spending time with!

I'll keep working on it. I still can't help feeling I must be doing something wrong, I mean what are the odds of this happening to three different doors?

I'm able to read and post here frequently because I do a lot of work on computers.

I would say almost 95% of the door knob locks I see key has to turn COUNTER CLOCKWISE to unlock the door. If you are ONLY picking them clockwise you are just trying to lock a door that is already locked. I have also seen kik door knob locks that refuse to unlock if one of the door knobs is turned a bit or the bolt is not fully extended in the door jam.

Surprised that after all that nobody, not one person at all, suggested a plug spinner.

TShock has a post up in the manual picks forum regarding a cheap (read: <$3) plug spinner that db swears by hehe.

a plug spinner will work and can mess up at times to. he can also bypass the lock but that takes the fun out of picking it.
