Lock with lock guard?

Postby Markhicko » 8 Aug 2006 12:39

Hey guys completely new to lockpicking, was up till 3am yesterday watching vids about how to pick locks and reading up and im very interested.

I am english, thought id make that clear because our locks are alot smaller compared to yours over in america.

I have a problem, i keep looking up for a certain part of a lock that doesnt ever seem to exsist on your lock pictures and vids, and i searched to see if someone had posted something similar but came up with nothing.

Basically im sitting there with a home made pick and tension wrench and i decide to give picking my cheap cash box a pick, for a start its very wobbly making getting the right amount of tension or gettin it in the right place almost impossible but thats not my problem.

Right il send u a link to 2 pics of the safe but untill i get my camera back from a friend its the best i can do.

im going to try to explain the best i can about this lock. The lock seems to only be a 3 pin simple lock by the key that is for it. but there seems to be a spring loaded lip on the front of it basically preventing me from picking it, this lip is about 1-2 millimeter(s) inside the lock and it comes down about half way over the entire hole, when u insert the key, because of the angle of the "teeth" it just lifts it and fits in fine. this isnt the first time ive seen this lip on a lock but urs dont seem to have it (lucky)

This is probably a really obvious simple thing that you guys have seem and worked out a million times but to me its baffling.

Heres the link:

All critisizm is welcome

Peace

Does the lip look squareish?

If so, it might not be any sort of guard, simply a wafer, which would mean your dealing with a wafer lock.

Just so you know, a cash box isn't the best lock to ask for advice on, unless you can prove you own it. Im sure you own it, but just be careful, we do get some people with the wrong intentions on here, so please dont be insulted. A pic of the cashbox that proves its yours would be good, when you get your camera back.

LIke I said, it might just be a wafer lock, pics of the lock mechanism would be good.

Welcome to the site.

Those boxes use wafer locks... I remember the one I once used had 3 wafers.

Mild tension, and a gentle rocking of the pick should open this lock without difficulty.

That part yuo mention is actualy one of the wafers.

I took photos of the interior of these locks, and posted them here: http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=10541

Thanks for reading. :)

I could not help but grin ear to ear while reading your post. This is exactly what happened to me. After I had my first small padlocks open as a beginner, my cashbox caught my eye as well. I peered into the keyway and took those "lips" as you call them to be regular pin tumbler. So I started picking and a few mins later the thing was open. But for my life, I could not "relock" it into the other direction, until much later when I found out how to deal with those wafer locks. :)
Due to financial limitations the light at the end of tunnel has been turned off until further notice.

Looks like u guys are right

Postby Markhicko » 8 Aug 2006 16:47

definately seems like its a wafer, and i understand about your defensiveness about the fact that im trying to unlock a cash box

il get some pics of it up, its really old and sooo wobbly, it can turn about 10-15 degrees inside of the housing, i dont even need to use a tension wrench lol

il have agood read up on wafers now :)

thnx for the welcome guys

Im glad you understand the touchy-ness of the subject, Its something some newbies dont seem to get. :? :?

After you open it (or have you already?), you'll probabley want to get a pin tumbler, maybe something easy like a master lock or a cheap house lock.

Happy pickin!!

always a little shocking/amusing/othersimilaremotions to know (and see incidentally) the value of items some people put in such boxes-

we get them alot as the sentry fireboxes, incredibly easy to open. we keep on hand a collection of stamped keys from ones we create to these boxes, as the lock faces are all coded with letters/numbers-
it makes it easy when ppl come in with a box, just pulling out the right key-

ive caught myself once or twice thinking it would be nice to make myself a ring collection, copied from our current one... before slapping my head and realizing carrying a paper clip around would be so much easier... and just as effective
