deadbolt trifles

Postby hybridvirus » 11 Aug 2006 22:39

I got a deadbolt from Walmart and installed it onto a board.
It has 2 keyholes, 1 on each side.. weird..
but.. one keyhole.. i raked it and some pins and things fell out.
I took it all apart again and tried putting it back together with NO luck whatsoever. But, i noticed that 2 of the tumbler little pin things where concaved in, and i thought to myself that it could have something to do with security? Whats the dilly with this?
I have no idea how to put the pins back in right, i tried by myself several times.
I put the lock back together on the board, the one side still works for practice.

So when the pins fell out, was this after you had raked it open? Did you slide the plug forwards out of the lock by accident? I don't really understand where the pins popped out of, so I can't suggest how to fix it.

As for the security pins. Are they spool pins or mushroom pins or something else? Matt Blaze hosts some great pictures that he has taken of a few different types of security pins on his site: http://www.crypto.com/photos/misc/lockpins/

I remember there was a post recently in which Mr. Blaze had some copyright infringement against him, but I don't remember the resolution (I searched but couldn't find the exact post). I hope I am allowed to post the link to his site (it's such a great site).

Do a search on LP101 for 'security AND pins' to read about what security pins do.

Also, have you repinned a cylinder before? I repin a cheapo Kwikset deadbolt from WalMart often, but it's only got one plug (one keyhole). If you haven't repinned anything before, I can go through how I repin my deadbolt step by step - I don't know how different it will be from your two plug model though.

Good luck.

Why do you think it's weird that a deadbolt has keys on both sides?

It's meant for this kind of door, so if someone busts the glass and reaches in to turn the latch, they'll quickly find out that they still need a key even inside the house.. haha.. stupid burgulars. =)

I have a door like that on my house and keyed on both sides.

As for your pins and things falling out.. can you show us a picture? of the parts that fell out ? pins don't normally fall out of the hole where you insert the key, did something fall apart inside the lockboard you made?

i guess they are spool. so nvm, i went back and looked.

how do you get past spools?
im having a hard time picking the deadbolt, it seems the 2nd pin just wont go up. i dunno if thats got anything to do with the spool or not.

yea i'd rlly like to see that if you wouldn't mind showing me.

well.. ( im new i dont know my locks well)
Theres a plate that you put on that keeps the springs and pins in yes?
i think the plate came off. when uninstalled the lock from the block of wood ( cause i heard rattling) the little plate was off.
I didnt know what it was for at first, but as i was messing around with the lock parts i slowly started to figure it out.. and i guess the plate just fell off. but im having trouble putting back the springs and pins in that certain way to match the key.
i put the key on the table and matched up the pins so they were lined up and i put them in that way.. but i have no idea how to put in the springs to make it work, and i dont even know if its the springs that is the wrong part or what.
It didnt fall out of the key insert, the plate popped off when i raked it i think.. thats the only conclusion i can come up with, with my mininum knowledge of locks.

Well, if it's a deadbolt from walmart, it may be defective. I mean, if raking causes pins to come out, you know there's a problem. The plug is inside a cylinder, when you raked, did the plug come forward at all? Is the retaining pin still in the back of the plug?
