Anyone Picked at a Military style 5200 Series Padlock. Locally Purchased on any military installation at the PX or SHOPETTE. I have one that has no key and I have tried to shim with no success(possible that shim was operator error). Back pins will not stay picked while picking to front. I have tried back to front, front to back, feathered tension to extreme tension, NO LUCK back 2 PINS WON'T SET.
ANY KNOWLEDGE WOULD BE GREAT
(I could go buy one but gas is so expensive these days to travel to post just to buy a lock, lol)

Yes I have several 5200's I have picked, taken apart, repined and all kinds of fun stuff.
You an not shim these locks open, when locked both sides of the shackle are held locked in by a ball bearing, the bearins rest on a solid brass cam that when the lock rotates to the open position the bearings move back away from the shackle.
If you take the lock apart, once you open it, you will find it has from two to four security pins. The security pins should be spool pins or serated pins or a combination of the two types. As of today I haven't found more than four security pins and most of them have been spool type pins.
From the sounds of what you are describing I would say you are not setting one or more of the security pins completely keep practicing and you will get it but IMHO it takes a while. One more thing all of the 5200's I have picked set from back to the front, but there could be some out there that don't, you just have to feel the lock.

I found a key to one of my old 5200's and so i took it apart and wow.
This lock to me is absolutely amazing. 5 pin tumbler with Serrated bottom pins and 3x2 Top pins 3 serrated and 2 spool, not even to mention that it is impossible to shim due to the dual ball cylinder in the top of the lock which holds the balls in place while the cylinder is in the locked position, when the key is inserted and turned to the unlocked position the balls are allowed to retract into 2 grooves on the ball cylinder, keeping it locked and un-shimable. Looks like the only way to open is picking it, I will post some pics

Dude, just forget it. I've tired and tried and tried, and I haven't been able to do it. I put my picks in, and the lock just yawns and says "huh?"
Now those POS master warded locks that some of my battle buddies were unlucky enough to purchase both at basic and NALC (the one at Fort Lewis) are a different story. Picked with ceader bark.

GSA nice pictures, I realy like the third one down with the exploded view, good work.
SFGOON I don't guess I need to tell you this but they can be picked it takes awhile but they can be beat.
I changed my post before I submited it I was going to post something like NA NA NA I can pick a 5200 and you can't ha ha ha but then I thought about it and I'm sure there are some that you can beat that I can't so I decided to play nice and not brag.
I do like these locks and I find them a great challange, also I can get tons of them because the troops seem to keep loosing keys and having to cut them off so there is an endless supply to play with.

looks like geesa de nihil got it all figured out himself. I had one o those red sunburned aluminum body locks, and they are very pickable, though you will want to build your own picks, since the average pick you might buy will have a thick shaft that is not adaptable to the small keyway.

I appreciate the good word, and by the way yes I figured out why back 2 pins were not setting, the plug had a bunch of built up sand and rust or some kind of chunky goop around the springs in the plug . being that the key even had a little trouble 3/4ths the way in just a little wiggle and walla key goes in key opens lock pick goes in pin gets stuck, lol. I assume that most people just pull the plug and not that ball cylinder, it had some contribution to the friction of the plug being that it was full of grit, but with a little cleaning and simple green it works like I just bought it. of course now its cleaned and ready for war it failed to withstand "THE PICK" lol i popped it in about 45 seconds, I think thats a record for me.

A while back a guy I know lost his keys and had another set in his woodworking shop, so I'm supposed to open that door for him, I put the pics in and I cant feel anything, there is no click click click of pins droping the entire lock had been filled with graphite. the springs were clogged. I had no lube with me at the time, so a piece of sweeper bristle was used to dip into a used bottle of automotive lube, and then it was put in the lock, after this, a further session of picking and wiping the grunge off the pick frequently, got it loosend up to where it picked. its easier to solve that a rusted lock I guess.

Last thing I heard the american army bases also had their own gas stations that are selling to the armed forces at the american price. Compared to the german gas prices, this was something I would have killed for. But the guys I would have had to kill were all well-trained and armed, so...
I don't know what the situation is like at your place, but if you are allowed to shop in the PX you should be able to get cheap gas, no?

Sorry to flood this thread, consider the above post irrelevant. I have just noticed that the original poster is from the US of A and therefore all I said above is dumb and useless.
Now, I will go and see if cleaning my contacts improves my reading capabilities...

yes yes the only place i do shop is on post but that doesn't mean it's not expensive. I am in washington state and gas is about 4-6 cents cheaper on post, that still isn't cheap enough for what i get paid, lol. gas is outrageous everywhere we just need to erradicate iraq, and iran go in start pumping oil, get rid of all the people that can work that dont, cause i'm tired of inflation and paying taxes for low life people that dont deserve the free money and such, lol, that would lower the prices of everything but they have to keep pay rates the same and keep giving yearly raises to those that deserve a raise. BY THE WAY I DON'T MEAN TO OFFEND ANYONE IF YOU COLLECT THE FREE MONEY OR DISAGREE WITH MY IDEAS, lol.

The 5200 "bumps" open after about four medium hard taps.
I made a bump key for it and it has worked on several 5200 padlocks I tried like butter!

well considering that the army pays $4.17 each, and other places online such as http://www.keymart.com/american_locks.htm for $12.83 each, i would say no it's not worth it because you can find cheaper with better shipping. maybe you can also check with local Military Surplus store they usually can order or already have and some don't charge for shipping and handling, look around online before commiting to ebay by the time you pay for there lock your paying approx. $25.00 and that is too much. Good Luck
