Hi everyone,
watching most of Barry Wels's video presentations, i decided to
make myself a bumpkey. as everyone know, once you're successfull
bumping your first lock you just want to make sure it was't luck so
you try again and again.
well working with a brass key, the shoulder broke off after i manage to the lock about 50 times,by hitting it with a screwdriver
i then decided tomake a tomahawk using a piece of pvc strip with
a piece of plastic in front. now i had my own bumping hammer.
not having any keys made of proper material i decided to make a new shoulder for my bumpkey.
material and tools used:
dril
drilbit -same thickness as screws
vicegrip- to hold keys while drilling
hacksaw- to cut screws
grinder/file -to shape
hammer- to flatten
two brass screws
some spare keys
let's start:
move key heads to correspond with existing shoulder or where
new shoulder should be.
now clamp both heads on top of each other.
drill through both heads
use middle pices of brass screws and hit them through the holes
in the two heads
use ball of hammer and flatten both sides to ensure it won't come apart.
now grind or file the heads into a decent looking shape, then use sandpaper to smooth.
now i have a question?
having the shoulder n the side , won't it damage the inner cylinder
although it also rest against the outer hull.?
i am including photo's
i do hope the photos work as i am not sure to post photos
feedback will be appreciated
thank guys

I have made loads of bump keys for loads of different keyways, and it is true that with some key profiles, once you have removed a bit off the shoulder, you are left with little metal left to withstand the knocking.
I understand you logic in strengthening the shoulder and a nice try.
Personally, as a locksmith, if i ever break the shoulder I just get a new key blank and cut another from my master.
Remember though that not all locks are bumpable, so repeatedly whacking them will no doubt cause you keys to eventually fail. Plus you will dent the face of the cylinder.
Having looked at your idea I might visit my workshop and see if I can create some universal 'plates' which I can attach to my keys to prolong their life.
regards

To Make a bumpkey, how do you exactly know how deep to make the cuts if you are going to make one by hand? Jus5t judge by the lowest cut on the key?

carse - great idea, how is it working out for you? I think I may give your idea a try just to see how well it goes.
I really have not been doing very much with bump keys. I too was turned on to bump keys by Barry's video, he makes it look so freaking easy to make bump keys. My first try was successful but I quickly learned the impact was important too. I had a working bump key but only with correct impact.
I wonder how long before we see a auto bump gun with changeble keys?

hi bud wiser
at the moment i am just using a union barrel lock for bumping, i,m also new at trying my luck with the bump key thing. i know a lot of these guys on this forum say that bumping is not realy something, because to pick a lock is actualy more fun, after picking your lock, hearing that click ,i can't descibe the feeling but it makes you keep on picking ,almost like having a orgasm, sorry only jocking , please do not flame me .
the guys like new lockbie and co. must just remember some of us are still new to lockpicking , and if we want to discuss bumping for the next year i am sure it is up to the admin guys to call it a day.
further more , i am a silent member for more than a lot of the guys, but i love all of their input and advice , i do try to read and try what they suggest, i know tey get fedup because a lot of newbies are to lazy to realy use the search button
anyway i am still bumping ,untill my picking skills inprove anough to be on the same level as new lockbie.

Heh if your new to lockPICKING, then why are you bumping?
I jsut always though that bumping should be kept to the bedrooms and not the forums. Just a bit of discretion. wait, key's? locks? what is this you speek of. Geez i'm lost

To some people,
Bumping seems like it unlocks the hole world, but it really dosen't. I think that the more you work on your objective, the better chance you have on suceeding. The less you work on your objective, you don't have as much of a chance.
Bumping is not working for your objective at all, so if you think your going to open everything up, your wrong. New locks are being developed being bump-proof, so this bumping buisness will soon end.
My point is, picking with a single pin-by-pin method (or raking) will open many more locks, rather then bumping. The "bumping approach" was just a discovered method for opening normal pin tumbler locks, and for sure n00bs will jump on this because there's not much to do to accomplish your goal. On the other hand, if an expert tries bumping a lock and dosen't succeed, other methods will be used to gain entry. That's the advantage.
N00bs will use this method for a short while to get into places, then it will end, and I am glad companies are taking notice of this and making their locks bump-proof and more secure.

You can use hot glue-gun-glue (yeah I know...) to make a new shoulder. This works OK, and gives some nice springyness. Wouldn't bother unless the original shoulder broke off tbh.

Hey nothing wrong with bumping at all. It is fun, and can be a challenge too. I doubt it's only for noobs, would hardly call Barry from Toool a noob
It's just another part of hacking locks; picking, bypass, bumping.
I want to try out explosives next
But I really liked your idea on reinforcing the keys.
