Opening an ABUS 160/50

Postby biggles21 » 15 Aug 2006 13:52

Hi all, I looked through the FAQs and several threads that I thought would be of help to me, but still i am unable to open my ABUS 160/50.

Here's a pic:

If someone could enlighten me as to how I might go about opening this lock, that would be extremly helpful.

Thanks!

Anything else would be a bypass.

did it come new

If it wasn't new, when you got it, the brute force attack starts at about 1950, and work your way through the birth years of this generation to the present, once I did this and it turned out to be set for the year 2002 or some such. there are very thin shims that can be used to feel for the flat side that amounts to the gate in one of these, but the tool makers are chased by the lock designers who try to keep them out with new flanges and wards. If you take the thin shim out of a 'BestBuy' type of antitheft tag, and work it toward the axle of one of the wheels then use a tool to turn the wheel (cant get both hands on the tiny wheel and one hand is holding a shim so push the wheel with the eraser of a pen or something. if you push a wheel all the way around and find that one number on the wheel feels different in some obvious way then look for this on the other wheels and line them up, I do not know this specific lock you show, but the type has a lot of varients and the abus iteration would be expected to be good.

They're easy enough to just tear apart TBH, and a range of inventive techniques spring to mind. :P

Hello and welcome to my first post.
I registered to find a way to open a similar lock (Abus 160/40), but I just found out how it works, so I will bump this thread in case someone is searching for this lock. It is very easy and i think it is a common way to open locks with number combinations.

About the lock:
The lock opens if you know the right combination (three digits). If you want to change the combination, you have to open the lock, turn a screw which is located at the right side of the lock, choose your new combination and turn the screw back.

The lock will not open if you pull the shackle and turn the wheels (even if you get the combination right). That was the main reason why i bought it btw., because that works well for many other locks... :)

How to do it:
The axle is not round. It is D-shaped! You do not even need to feel the shape with an extra tool, it is possible to see the flat side of the axle. Make all the flat sides point towards the back of the lock (that means you turn the wheel until you see the flat side of the axle, look at the current number and add "5", so you turn the wheel 180°). Pull the Shackle and the lock will open. :)

Back to the pins...
