Bump Key Shoulders and Tips question..

hi, im fairly new to this but i just love lockpicking and always wanted to learn about it, and yes I've successfully picked quite a number of locks with manual tools. now i am VERY interested in bump keys... i have three of em: SC1, WR5, KW1 and im really not sure if the shoulders and tips are taken off.

but heres another part of my question, which is the MOST confusing one to me: Is it actually neccesary to take shoulders and tips off? i mean isnt it possible to use em just as is?

Can you make the black bit go away on your pic? it makes it rather large otherwise,

If the shoulder isnt modified where would you be hitting the key to?

The only way you can get away with not touching the tip or shoulder is if you cut the key forward on the blank thus moving the cuts away from the shoulder to begin with,

How did you get them?

Were they bought as bumpkeys? if so then sure give them a go,

Otherwise put one in a lock and see if once its set with the pins correctly that the shoulder is either touching the plug or not, if its got a gap then go for it, if its sat in and theres no gap then you will need to touch them up with a file,

Its hard to look at a pic like that and give you a definate answer,

Read a paper on bumping... it doesn't sound like you understand the purpose of shaving the tip and shoulder at all.

There are two methods, the pull-out method and the minimal-movement method, and shaving the shoulder/tip are only required for one of those....

Just to explain this in a different way, push the key all the way in. If it pushes back out slightly then you don't need to remove anything from the shoulder. If you push it all the way in and it stays there then you need to shave some of it off.

well its not that i didnt read it, i just wanted to ask was it neccesary and i see now that IT IS important. yea thanks for the info though ill study more.

and i tried the push in test, and it came out a bit and i saw a gap so the keys are fine now, i tested it and they work! yay...

and jimb i REALLY REALLY respect you for making that bump tool man GREAT item
