You need to try and be more specific about your lock. Is it a Master combination lock? Or is it a Sesamee style lock that you set individual wheels to a 0-9 number? Post a picture if you have one.

A locksmith will be able to help you, so you should keep that in mind as your FIRST course of action.

If you are in a rush to get into the basement then i suggest you call a locksmith as learning how to pick a lock could take you weeks as for manipulating a dial type lock this could take even longer.
What type of lock does the basement door have, you mentioned a dial type lock but didnt say if this was the type of lock that you had securing the basement door. And if it is how could you have forgotten the number to open it.

i just moved into a new house ang there is a section of the basement blocked off and i dont have the money for a locksmith and i dont need to get down there right away so figured learning to crack it would be usefull anyway.

Seeing as it's just downstairs, it should be really easy for you to answer Chuck's questions, right?
