Those locks you've got--master, kwikset, mountain security--are all very poor quality with poor tolerances, which does make picking easier but: THE HIGHER THE TOLERANCES OF THE LOCK THE EASIER IT IS TO BUMP.
It's easier to bump expensive, high-quality locks with tight tolerances than it is similar inexpensive locks with low tolerances. I've noticed that those dinky padlocks in particular, master mountain brinks etc, require a very hard smack with the bump hammer to bump open. Trust me, if you want a really easy lock to learn bumping off of, get a decent quality Schlage or Schlage knock-off mortise cylinder with a C keyway. They can be found on ebay by the dozen for pennies apiece, and yes, a schlage deadbolt from home depot/lowes/ace/etc. will work just as well (but if you don't have one already then it's definately not worth paying $30 just to get one to bump).
ta-da! $1.50 + $4.50 shipping, and it's even a real brand-name 'Schlage' cylinder (you can see 'Schlage' stamped on the front) perfect! : http://cgi.ebay.com/SCHLAGE-MORTISE-CYLINDER-LOCKSMITH_W0QQitemZ260012368292QQihZ016QQcategoryZ67030QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

same reason people don't pronounce my last name EXACTLY as it's spelled. they add or change letters at their leisure. or when they glance at something and THINK they've read it. and yes, i do this too at times. but cheer up kryptos, people should get the message now.

What I'd like to know is why kryptos keeps forgetting to add the 'T" in his name

Can anybody show me evidence to suggest that any sort of professional locksmith would ever bump a lock rather than pick it?
I doubt this.
Suppose a locksmith gets called to a place for an emergency lock-out job. Imagine the reaction of a home or business owner as the locksmith begins to pound away on his bump key with a mallet or something like that. The entire procedure just looks so crude when compared to the process of picking the lock open with quality-made lock picking tools.

haha.. and if he didn't have a rubber shoulder, he'd leave a nasty shoulder indention on the top of the keyway.
I don't imagine he'd ever be called back. The owner (who assumedly has never heard of bumping) is likely to say the lockie beat the lock into submission like a caveman.

The correct anwser would be...
If it's that easy to defeat his lock, and the owner was smart, he'd ask the lockie about getting some better lockes. I know I would

A better question would be...
What does locknewbie21 have to say about this

The one situation, the one lock, I can think of where bumping it open would be MUCH faster than picking it (or using any other bypass technique, for that matter), would be Mul-T-Lock; that's where I can definately see a bump key coming in VERY handy for a lockie responding to a lockout.

While I will probably carry around some bumpkeys for the common keyways, I doubt I will ever really rely on them. There will be no change to the majority of locks out there. At least not in the US. I mean, you can pick a Kwikset or master almost as fast as bumping anyway.

Isnt this the thread that you show your true feelins on bump keys?
[quote="Shrub"]I say no, i think to turn up at a job with bump keys and open the door with them isnt a good impression, i would always get the picks out and try first even if its a high security lock, if then after a while of trying and there is no other optiong/entry point i would then and only then use bum keys if i indeed carried them.[quote]
Can I just ask what a customers response to you spending 10 minutes picking the lock and failing and then bumping the lock in 30secondsish would be? Or would you send them off looking for entry points whilst you whipped them out? Sorry to quote out of thread.
