Slimline picks against US style picks comparrison

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

i dont get the problem with the slimline picks i own both usa and uk sets (uk from devon locks and now my new us style set from lockpicktools) and i dont notice any trouble using both in any lock i can get my hands on . even a tight keyway of a Abus padlock seems to be fine with both, so all i can say is if there is a differnece i dont know what it is for maybe they mean there are even tighter keyways out there in euro some were that is even smaller than Abus padlock

Before someone goes away with the wrong advice from this thread, you CAN NOT pick tight european keywayed locks with the US style picks, i understand what your saying skedone but thats in your experiance, there are many many locks that those picks will not fit into,

I would hate someone to read your comments an go away and buy a US set for it to be a waste of money,

Look at this keyway for an example,

If your in europe buy the european sets, if your in the us buy the us sets,

its all micro scale

Postby raimundo » 21 Aug 2006 10:32

in keyways, everything is on a micro scale, so difference is also very small, the best answer to effective warding is a thin pick that has been sanded to a rounded cross section throughout the shaft and pick head, round off those sharp edges for working in effective wards, and for that winkhaus, probably use a pianowire hook, the shaft is truely round in cross section, and so also is the pick tip,
The difference between an effective pick and a difficult one can be very small so thats why picks need to be sanded.

That's a caliper measurement, or an estimate? And I'd say that 0.3 mm out of, what, about 1.5 mm? That's 20%

I think he means the differance between the two is 0.3mm so the us style will be 0.3mm thicker than the euro ones,

Yes, I realize that. I just wasn't sure if it was an estimate, or if an actual measurement was made. The rest was me saying that 0.3 is actually a lot.

Fill out your profile so we know where you live,

My SO euro picks are 0.524mm thick (micometer measurement)
My Falle set are 0.61mm (micometer measurement)
My Majestic set are 0.568mm (micrometer measurement)
My home made hacksaw picks are 0.575mm (micometer measurement)
My home made junior hacksaw picks are 0.45mm (micrometer measurement)
My home made wiper insert picks are 0.8mm (micrometer measurement)

All measurements are +/- 0.002mm,

Now lets see some US measurements, i used a micometer as these digital calipers arent that accurite,

I'm with ray, rounding your picks will work.

the wider wiper inserts are my favorite, there thick enough that literly my slimest hooks... its all i make anymore and 5x skinnier than SO's

Just by rounding them and sanding they fit most any lock around.

I havent had access to a camera but i will post a pick of them.

I would recomend a jewlerys 5x eye piece, i can make fully functional hook in 2 hours.. thats shaping.. reshaping dry filing, lube filing, then going from 500-1200 grit emory with silicon lube.

As ray told me, only sand your pick in one area per grit, as you sand the grit becomes finer.

Then just to buff it really good i take a dremel rubber buffer thing. i don't know the name crank the RPM's and polish it.

This will give you a mirror finish.

My thickness cut off.. meaning its not even useful is .12mm.
You can only touch the tension wrench and its not useful on crpapy locks

Quick tip, .13 thickness halfball with a piece of thin heat shrink addheared to the tip will let you grip medeco pins for rotating and can feel better.

I will try and get some picks up... if i ever find the damnn camera
